Default My project car - 6th oct updated

A quick update on my current project car.

I havent seen the old girl in the flesh yet, but other than a couple of minor issues that the painter will put right once we have finished rebuilding, all is good.
I am very pleased with the result.
The paint is 997 GT3RS orange and apparently takes loads of coats and is a pain to apply The interior is the same colour but in matt. Once the black seat, black flocked dash, black wheels, black anti slip floor, black trim is on it will look fine and dandy..... Well I think so anyway
Oh and the chrome bits will be black too

To start with it will run a standard 325i engine. When that blows we will change it for something more interesting. Something like an E36 M3 or E46 330.
But to be honest it will have more than enough power to keep me entertained in the first instance.

get yourself a 525e bottom end and make yourself a nice 2.7

when you change the lump, you should be able to squeeze in one of the 4.4 v8 in there. only down side is the weight i guess. e36 m3 lump would be good though.

as you say, will have enough power to keep you entertained. esp as that chassis will be uber stiff and should be a bit lighter, even with the cage in there. bmw sound proofing weighs a fair bit doesn't it!

BMW sound proofing is very heavy as stated.

I will stay with what I have for now and look at what's around when the time is right.

Spent another day working on the old girl yesterday. It was my first chance to see it after the paint job and I have to say I was really happy with the results. There are a couple of minor issues but the painter has agreed to sort those plus any other marks we put on the car during the rebuild.

First up I had the chance to chat to my friends who were on their way to the ring. It was Jasons first chance to drive the supercharged Exige on track and he was looking forward to it.

My initial impression on the colour was that it looked good, even when in a not greatly lite garage.

Another friend Nick arrived to say hello and scowl at his Mk2 golf. Alot of money has been thrown at it in the last year or so and he has had nothing but bad luck. The latest engine has been found to have a crack on the sump so it may have to come back out again. Probably the 10th time in the last year that an engine has been put in or taken out. This one is running a safe boost and producing around 250bhp. Not bad for a 900kg Mk2 Golf.

A couple of random pictures of the old girl prior to us starting on the trim re-fit

Side trim cleaned and fitted

Gareth putting the door pins, locks and handle back in place

Nick turned back up without the kids this time and took the Mk2 for a spin up the road. Spin being the main word....... Nail it at 50mph in top and it spins the wheels Sooner him than me

Next up we fitted the rear window. A pig of a job but it went in eventually

The heated front window was another git of a job, but we got there in the end

Next up it was time to fit the plastic windows made by a local glazing company. We had pre-fitted then several months back so knew they all fitted. Always worth doing.

Finally we started thinking about spraying and fitting the under window trim. Chrome just doesn't cut it so we are going for black as shown here.

Next visit should see the rest of the window bits finished, other than we have to come up with a cunning slider for the drivers window for access to the ticket machine at the ring. With a bit of luck the bumpers will be cleaned up and fitted too. Once that's done and the other chrome blacked out we can move inside and start with the dash etc.

Loads to do still .....

Thanks for that. We are considering something different rather than the horrible land rover mould attracting sliders. If we can't come up with something better on our own it might have to do though.

Any particular reason you went for a 4 door rather than a 2 door?

4 doors are stronger ...........

Either that or the real reason which was I intended to buy it and muck around with it as a track car without doing much to it. That kind of went out the window though I actually like the 4 door look now

Throw in a 4.4 V8, that'd finish her off nicely

Looking good GP

the black and orange works really well imo.

for the window, could you fashion a bracket on the inside of the door that allows you to use a full size perspex window. and allows you to slide it up and down? Couple of brackets made out of aluminium with a clip to hold the window up. no mould and keeps the standard window look. shouldn't be too heavy either.
