Default Another bit of "outside the box" thinking. Interested in your opinions.

Okay chaps.. for reasons i cant be arsed to go into, i need a new "quieter" exhaust.

I'll be having a new setup made by Simpson race exhausts. I will have them make it to a specific DB level so i have no more worries on track.

However one idea ive been toying with for a while now is having the end of the tailpipe curved down. Now the exhaust needs replacing this is a perfect oppotunity to have it done. This is quite commonplace on big power scandinavian cars etc but no really seen over here.

I fully appreciate that loads of people will hate this (Diesel look) but i like it cos its different and serves a very good purpose of deflecting a large ammount of noise.

Any thoughts??

Is this just going to be a track BB? or everyday

Fits the purpose if just for track, not sure about the look for all other times though

Hey Frayz
I think thats an original idea and why not. The sound wont be much different having the tailpipe turned down as that is normally taken care of by the baffle and diameter of the system, but anyway its a cool idea and i like it.

Rich

P.S how did you find the 'ring'? Got any pics?

Rich.. this is ripped from another thread.

"Okay guys im back,
Had a bit of a mare, but it could of all been worse. The car requires quite an overhaul of the front drivetrain and shes in need of a new braking setup.
We had a front wheel bearing let go and the Brembos just arnt cut out for the ring. So maybe AP or Porsche setup is in order.
We got in 5 laps before the bearing let go and we were lapping in the very early 9's passing bikes and the odd porsche is a rather nice feeling. I know the curcuit very well now and can drive every bend in my head.. i just have to learn how to drive it quickly for real now."

This idea is to be an everyday system as well as to be used on track.

I fully appreciate that there will be lots of people that dont/wont like it.

Thankyou for your input guys.

My personal opinion would be not to do it. But it would look different.

Nice ring pics btw...

I'm with others on here, your car is one of my favs and I really am not a fan of the downturned tailpipe idea... why not get a massive bung made up or something?!

Or, just get the Custom Exhaust place to make it up so it only really lets rip higher up the rev range, I'm led to believe that they can do almost everything... so shouldnt be a problem??

Cheers,
Grant

I'm with the others to I'm afraid.... a decent looking exhaust can make or break a car in my eyes. I've seen pics similar on nasioc as well so had plenty of time to decide if I like it or not. It's got to be worth trying a bung before anything else, failing that look at a custom pipe made to measure.

certainly be a big original step dude, but then thats what makes your car the one people look up too, and you are a big fan of the big power scandenavian scene so i say go for it

plus remember, function before form dude, and it certainly serves a function

Ive used a bug and its not enough.. plus they look sh1te and they restrict the car too much. I used an APS bung last week at the ring and my car felt like someone was wringing its neck.

Im sure the chaps at Simpson Race Exhausts can do whatever i want regarding sound however im getting tired of the usual "run of the mill" stuff

Wink

Could always get them to design it with a removable tail pipe so you can chop and change

You know my views ...... The 'purpose' of the exhaust is the key, not so much how it looks

No! Hell No! Don't do it Frayz. Your STi is one really tastefully modded and putting a diesel back box onto your would just ruin your car completely.

I know you want to be different, so di I and many other people with modding there Impreza, but this idea is the worst.

Have a look on this site, which I am sure you have seen before, but worth a look again.

By the way Frayz

Have you seen that little device that sits halfway down the car, on your exhaust? It operates with an actuator and can quieten/louden your car from the cockpit. I cant remember who makes it unfortunately but i remember seeing it in either Banzai or Jap Performance magazine.

Any help??

I personally think that looks ace, although i would prefer it without the blue tip. There's something very purposeful about it without being ott

Not sure the Honda one would give the result you need, however it does look hard as nails.

Know where you’re coming from, I fully agree. Maybe the big shiny drainpipe type back box has had its day, that Honda looks purposeful and has a pro look about it

Frayz; It wont make much difference to a sound test reading as they will hold the meter in line to the axis at the exit of the exhaust at 45 deg and 50 cm etc etc (or at least that is the standard method on tracks here).

It may prevent you having a sound test in the first place if it makes a big difference to the apparent noise, but pointing the tailpipe down might increase the proprtion of reflected noise from the track surface.

Why not add a resonator in the mid section or just get an off the shelf one like mine that is full decat as I've not had noise problems anywhere.

allot of the wrc and rally cross cars have down swept tail pipes to pass the scrutineering as it can be hard when they have anti-lag and virtualy a straight through system to be within the competition db limmit!

i think it looks ok, as long as you dont go over the top with it and try to make it stand out too much.

That wil be the sort of look i'll be going for if not it will be similar to that of the S2000 shown.
