bought a new cam: EOS 400D
that thing's amazing..
first time using a DSLR.. that's another world!
haven't found time to use it in nice weather during the day yet..
so my first experiments happened at night, playing with shutter speeds:
what do you think?

yeah, that's with the kit 18-55.
except for the shot of the moon and the one right below it, where I wanted to test the Sigma 70-300 at full zoom, just to see what's possible.
the kit lense is pretty good for allround use I think.
(BTW, I know some aren't quite straight..
as said, just testing, not trying to be perfect..
)

Good fun. You might want to get yourself a hot-shoe flash for xmas. If you take it off the camera, you can actually walk into the long exposure frame and 'paint' bits that you want to highlight. Some examples here:

look like photoshops...
but you've got to have used really long exposure for some of them.. or do you run that fast??
@nick
I think the 18-55 is fine for everyday use.
I just wanted something longer for race shots and some stuff.. and the 300 barely cost any more than the 55-200 so I went for the big one.
If you want to get the best you'll have to buy a Canon lense with IS (ImageStabilizer), I've never used one but they're supposed to be great.. they're expensive though..
just start getting infos about it, there's quite a few things to know but it's no magic
The above were all made in the programm that lets you change the exposure time.. as well as the ISO. But with AutoFocus, could've done a bit more with manual focus but haden't realized that so far.
some other pics (not at all car related) to show what even an absolute beginner can do with the cam:

(integrated flash is quite good for fotos of people)
(longest post I've ever written...

they're 10 seconds plus exposures, impossible to hold that steady!
bought a really cheap tripod in some discounter for about £15.. works fine and ist 125cm fully extended.. but a more expensive one would probably be easier to adjust etc..
@f1sh4u
thanks!
just play with the exposure time at night.. I think it's harder to make a day shot look special..
Great pics, have just got a 400D myself after upgrading from a 300D, and think it is superb. Recently took it on holiday for 3 weeks and it performed really well.
Like the pics with car lights through it, amazing what it can do in low light situations. Biggest difference I've noticed over the 300D is how good the pics look straight out of the camera and how they don't need/benefit from any playing around in photoshop.
Here's one I took on holiday with a tripod and a 20s shutter speed. Not a scoob I know, but I think it shows how good the camera is.

was considering that.. but then remembered that guy with the ugly black gravedigger's car who's spending all day looking at internet forums and who'd probably critize me for it..
OK
But I'm not coming to winterthur!
I work next weekend so I thought I'd have a session at the airport.. if the weather's right.

2. I have no idea how other long zoom lenses compare to it, 'cause I've never used any others..
..so I hope someone else can answer your question.
(I think it's good but see above..
