Sandy J

Did you get the PD air intake from subaru dealer? Not seen this before - is warranty still in tact with this and does it make much difference performance wise?

Cheers

Neil,

The Cold Air Intake Kit is from Prodrive USA. As for the warranty, my dealer is confirming with Subaru UK (IM) to see if the Prodrive designed and manufactured kit will be covered under the warranty terms. They are treating it as a Prodrive after market part.

As for perfomance, the throttle response is sharper, as is the acceleration

The book that comes with the kit has this in the forward:

The Prodrive Cold Air Intake is the result of extensive development on a wide variety of cars. It is the most advanced Cold Air System on the market. Each system is specifically engineered for its application. All Prodrive Cold Air Intake Systems deliver maximum performance gains through lightweight, all aluminum, mandre-bent tubing that is tuned in both length and diameter. The aluminum will not crack in extended use like plasic. The tube length and diameter are matched for each specific engine to give power over a broad RPM range.

Unlike plastic systems that use a continually diverging cross-section, we take advantage of the acoustical energy in the inlet duct to promote cylinder filling during the intake and vale-opening vent.

Every intake is coated with high-gloss, heat reducing Zirconia based powder coating. This special blend of powder coating helps reduce heat penetration, which in turn reduces the temperature of the inlet charge. The cooler the inlet air temperature translates to more power during the combustion process because cool air is denser than warm air. The filter element has also been extensively developed. An integral part of all our filter elements is a built in velocity stack. This velocity stack is specifically engineered to improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the intake system. We have seen airflow gains on a flow bench of 12-15% by using this velocity stack. The air mass flow to the engine is increased because of the increased airflow and reduced inlet temperature, which translates to more power

Hope this helps Guys

Thanks for that. I would be interested to hear what your dealer says regarding the warranty.

I would be interested in this if the warranty is not effected. Does it sound much different to the standard airbox?

Cheers

This cold air intake kit would not be covered under your UK warranty as it's not been approved for use here. It's been designed in the US for the US market which is somewhat different to here in many ways. Most importantly, in the US customers buy parts from various places and then get their car remapped to suit, so the difference in spec from standard isn't important but here we would not sell anything that modified the intake system without a recalibration to make it work properly.

This sort of kit is really popular in the US, particularly in California but as it (almost!) doesn't rain there the fact that the filter is in the wheelarch doesn't matter. It's a bit different in the UK and we'd have to do an awful lot of testing to make sure the filter can't ingest water before we sold a kit with a filter in such a vulnerable location.

Mike,

Many thanks for that All my dealership questions answered in a oner above . I have had the filter on now for a good few weeks and driven the car in rainy conditions (heavy@ long distance) and as you rightly said above I checked to see if there was any spray / water on the filter.

There was none but totally agree with you that a lot more testing etc would have to be done in the UK on a long term basis to see if there were issues with position of the filter etc.

In your appinion would you reccomend a re-map (as the US documentation says it has been developed to run with the standard MAF etc)

Regards

Sandy

JRMWRX,

I have just had the Prodrive WR1 Springs fitted today and to say there was a vast improvement in the ride and handling would be an understatement

Having come from a P1 to a newage, the difference was noticable but now with the WR1 Springs on and a front strut brace we are getting back to P1 terrority
