Open the pic up in some photo editing software (Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro etc etc ) then use the eraser tool to erase the number

Oh and its best to resize the pic to about 600x 400 pixels

People can use cloned plates on similar cars to commit various driving offences etc, and thus the owner of the vehicle in question will get the blame

Surely you run the same risk everytime you take the car out of the garage. Agreed though it is making things easier for them if you post it on the web!
