VIDEO Gutmann pug is at it again new PB
Video from last weekend on the ring. A new PB for me in the pug and i'm more than a little pleased with it. The old girl ran a 8min 52sec. Not bad for 130bhp. I think if I sort my lines out a little more (poor in places) I might get somewhere near 8.45. But I dont want to kill myself in the process.
100 meg warning but worth a look

slowed you up...
lots of tyre squeal - are you running aggressive camber settings or is the tracking out?
Can see you beating 8:45 before long .. Leep us posted with any new vids...

1st time I have seen this sober
Brilliant - has to be one of the most committed laps I have seen!
So if I can offer anything constructive hear goes.
AF was a little odd, you seemed to turn in to everything very early, at 2.59 your line was very tight, following the right hand curb more would possibly have given more exit speed (dont get a wheel on the grass though).
3.46 you lift - that can be your new flat corner
4.30 I reckon you could do flat too
4.53 Bergwerk, compared to some of your corners, there was little tyre squeel here...meaning you can go faster in and get a higher speed up Kesselchen.
6.40 Did I hear a lift
7.25 & 7.33 any need for that gear change?
(Disclaimer - when I say you could do it flat, that does not mean I do or could......it means YOU could!)
Personally I can't see you taking 7 secs off that - I think even 2 secs is going to be VERY difficult now.

Thanks tmo.
I think there are a couple of non required gear changes. Coming into Hohe acht I have a little lift, I dont normally. My lines at AF were bad, my worst corner of the weekend. I break too early and too much for Berwerk and I made a hash of a couple of other bends.
My front tyres have one more weekend in them then I will change them and hopefully that will make a little difference too.
Cut slicks would be good for the car but not good for my pocket

If they are good enough for the I.O.M than i think they would cope with the Ring, just my humble opinion though

I dont doubt they are a good tyre but I have been advised by Colway themselves not to use them on the ring. I need longevity from a tyre and I dont think they are going to give me that.

Gary, so when you reach what you see as your ultimate lap, will you keep the clutter or move up to a new challenge? It's been an exciting ride but will you not now get bored with endless laps of the ring to find another tenth?
A very subjective question, keen to hear *your* opinion
You at Japfest tomorrow?

Personally I don't go to the ring to keep breaking records. In fact the last time I went I did 25 laps and never even timed one, I just thought it was too busy....and I had someone in my car all the time - which I think equates to 5-8 secs.
I just enjoy driving the place even after 250 laps, I can't wait to go back and do more. I guess there will come a time when you get slower....but I certain I will still have as much fun.

And you can have my opinion too
Going to the Ring isn't all about breaking PBs. It's about the social aspects too. We tend to try and give it large in the eating and drinking stakes too (except this weekend for me as I was a lightweight and ill )
The adrenaline starts pumping as you drive down the 258 towards Nurburg and the first sight of the track gives you goosebumps from the anticipation. The place is beautiful and there's a free car show in the Nordschleife car park every weekend. It's a petrol head's dream.
So, as to getting bored of it, I don't think it will ever happen. It will always be a challenge not to crash into the armco or something and there's always the new challenges of avoiding that crazy biker, (GET OUT THE ******* WAY! ) avoiding the newbie who doesn't know the lines yet, and the learning of different lines so the next lap you can do it better.
Oh, and giving passenger laps to newbies and helping them out is also satisfying, but you don't want them to like it too much, it's getting way too popular!

Thats a good question and one which i'm not sure the answer too. In fairness im pretty new to the whole track day scene. Only been doing it a couple of years. I think I was spoilt early on by driving the ring. I wont say everything else pales into insignificance after it but I will say its a damned hard act to follow.
I always remember a comment made by another guy on another forum ''its nothing special as a track, I would rather drive Castle Combe''. I'm not sure you will ever hear those words coming from my lips.
As Clare has said its more than about driving the track, its about friendships made, the place, the buzz the whole experience. For example this trip I spoke to a great many people in the car park some drive mark 2 golf's and some Porsches and one a carrera GT. Do they look down their nose at me? not one bit, they respect me for being there and doing my stuff and yes they move if I look like passing them too. There is no shame in it.
As for the perfect lap it just will never happen. Everytime I go I improve in one area or another. That pushes speeds up and means i'm arriving at the next section quicker which gives me a whole new set of issues to work on.
I think its fair to say that my french clutter will live and die at the ring, and when it does it will be replaced with whatever I can afford to run and do the same thing with. The only difference will be that HOPEFULLY the next car will be German registered so I can fulfill an ambition which is to race on the track for real.
I dont think i'm any more passionate about the place than anyone who goes once or twice a year or indeed every week as some friends do. Its just an amazing place and long may it remain open.
I hope this goes some way to answering your question?
Gary
A comment was heard to be made in the car park this weekend.... ''i've just payed £70K for this Porsche and some xxxxx has just passed me in a dark coloured peugeot 205 with stickers all over it'' and do you know what, the guy was laughing ........I REST MY CASE

Give me a couple months to get settled back in london and get a new 'toy' and I'll be right there with you all!
Itching to get back on track now....
