Default A "BREAK" from the norm!

These pics are mainly for those Scoobynetters that know me. I hope my posting them here causes no offence to other users of these forums. And hence, I apologise now to those of you who may find them a little disturbing!

The orginal injury occured on 9th January 2005 and the following pics were taken on 15th March 2005...

I am back at the hospital on Tuesday 19th April for more x-rays. I will try to get pictures of the original x-rays while I'm there.

K

Updated X-rays - pics taken 19/04/2005

As promised here are the x-rays taken on the 9th of January and those taken yesterday (19th April). i have put the respective views from each date (angle x-ray taken from) together for comparison.

Front View

9th Jan

19th April

Side View

9th Jan

19th April

You can just about see a union of the bone (pics 2 & 4 on 19/04/05) and i now have the go ahead to fully weight bear on that leg (after 3 and a bit months ). so needlesd to say i have been walking about without crutches. after an initial and minor bit of pain i can almost totally walk without limping. The only remaining discomfort is the numbness caused by some swelling in my foot (which is reducing).

For Simon (SCD that is)...

My next appointment date is 6 weeks from now (31st May) when they will be hoping to discharge me. Judging by my walking antics last night, there is no doubt that'll be my last visit (thank god... sitting around there for 2 hours every time only to be seen for a total of 10 mins max takes the pi$$).

K

hi Sara,

cheers

nothing so exciting as a bike accident. was on the receiving end of a bad tackle during a football match. although not malicious IMO, the other guy did go over the ball, straight legged and studs first, catching me full on just above my ankle.

he broke both the tibia and fibula in the process. regarding the pain, i can't really remember being in that much to be honest. having broken my jaw and my arm in 3 places in the past i guess my pain threshold is fairly high now! the inconvenience of not being totally independent drives you nuts!

K

ps.. fortunately it didn't break the skin, so scarring from the op is minimal!

Ooh,that looks nasty, get well soon mate

very similar to my right leg...a couple of self tappers and a length of titanium rod

only I never got to see my x-rays,I was too scared to look at them,Fudpucker don't do blood, pain or hospitals

and I can still feel the screws thro my skin to this day, almost 8 years later.

When I broke my leg I was competing in a round of the British Enduro Championship and strangely enuff it didn't hurt too much, that was, until they started to cut off my £200 m/x boots and brand new Oxbow riding pants

cheers Jon,

things aren't progressing soon enough for my liking. if you're paritcularly squeamish, don't look at this thread after Tuesday i might just be adding the originals taken before they fixed the break!

my leg is, i presume, still too swollen to feel the screws (which presumaby could come out at a later date). also with my legs being fairly muscular from footy i may be lucky enough never to feel them, depending on the angle of insertion (ooh er )

The above says it all and i should know coz like yourself i broke my Tibia and Fibula on 29/1/05 (i fell off a step whilst wearing some ice skates )
My next hosp appt is on 28/4/05 and am hoping for some improvement as it's 3 months after the event.
I like you have the rod and screws but only have one screw at the top and my Fibula is broken higher up.

Best of luck for 19/4. I for one will be very interested how it went for you.

Cheers
Simon

Si,

sorry to hear bout your leg - jan to april does seem like such a long time for the healing process to take (in terms of the break knitting), but then i guess these are fairly bad breaks. another lad came into the hospital on the same day with exactly the same injury as me. we exchanged numbers and he text 2 days ago to say his recent xray showed that progress wasn't as quick as expected.

Dazza,

not sure they intend to take them out??? they did say the nail shouldn't restrict movement around my ankle - that to me sounded as though it would be permanent. what is the standard procedure? do you know? i think i'll ask on Tuesday!

Marv,

hi mate. yeah i'm pretty full on. my arm has 3 plates and about 15 screws in, not to mention metal work for a broken jaw too well if a job's worth doing its worth doing well. i just wonder what's next?

K

When i go back on the 28/4 i'm just hoping for some improvement rather than everything being back to normal (I'm putting a minimal amount of weight on it when using the crutches)

Are you doing the same ?

Is your leg still slightly painful as mine is ?

If it's any help they told me the rod/screws would stay in on a permanent basis unless i was having a lot of bother/ substantial pain as it's another trauma to the leg to take it all out again.

Si,

they've advised i can 50% weight bear. some days it feels better than others. i don't really suffer with any pain (unless putting pressure on it), more swelling of my foot and ankle when not elevated (like at work).

mostly (during the day) i use both crutches, although it seems comfortable walking with just the one now. like you, i'll be happier on Tuesday to see that the gap has closed more than it had between 15th Feb and 15th March. any improvement is a bonus.

My consultant doesn't give much advice TBH, he's one of those types who only gives it as an answer to a question.
I asked him how long recovery would take and he said how long is a piece of string LOL

One thing i'm really going nuts over is not driving at present, have you spoken to them about driving ?

that's the answer i give when anyone asks me they reckon the swelling i'm suffering in my foot could take up to 6 months to go and the last time i went (he could see my dissapointment re the above xrays) he advised that it could take around 3 months for the bone to knit.

i was advised not to drive.. i think mostly from an insurance perspective. i can bear a fair amount of weight, but i suppose an emergency stop scenario would be in question given the nature of our injuries - and you know what insurance companies are like!

my (R)over seems extremely over servoed and would probably be ok, but Scoob has a pretty firm brake pedal requiring that bit more effort to depress. i'll see what the picture looks like on Tuesday. At present work send taxis for me daily at a cost of £50/day. i feel quite guilty, but there's not much i can do about it at the moment.

to be honest Si i neglected to ask. given the fact they are happy for me to fully weight bear without doing any damage - i took as an implication that i could, providing i felt comfortable.

my thinking is that no-one knows me better than me. and if i wasn't confident i was up to it then i wouldn't. i will be seeing the rest of the week out with the taxi's and then driving to work from next week.

i have the slightest bit of pain (almost not worth mentioning) when i take initial steps from rest, and then it feels ok. if i concentrate, i can even walk without a limp, but that does take a certain amount of focussing the mind.

Been to the hospital this afternoon and the x rays were visibly better than those of 7 weeks ago (bones binding together)
Same situation as yourself when you last attended in that i was advised to progress to full weight bearing over the next week or so (3 months tomorrow since the accident) i didn't ask ask about driving but my school run specialist wife did LOL, she shouldn't have bothered really because all he said was just do it when you feel able.

Simon

P.S. Are you going to the Northern Big One on 12/6/05 ?

Just had a thought do you think they would set aside a parking area for the owners of red scoobs who have rods and screws in their right leg LOL
