Indeed it was paul! How on earth did you guess?
Having a mate that used to be an audio fitter does have its uses at times!
All you need to do dave is change the standard subaru head unit and i'm sure you'd notice a significant difference in yours.

Just for some advice
Just for those not into there audio and ICE installs this might help ya
All sound and terible should be coming from the front of the car, and the front of your ears. 6*9's in the boot or parcel shelf is a beginners BIGGEST mistake.
Get the most expensive powerfull comps you can in the front and power them bridged of a good amp (or headunit if amp is not wanted). Get these working the best and this will cripple anyone running 2 or 3 cheaper sets all over the car.
The entire principle of the speaker is wrong
1. a full range speaker needs to be facing the seats directly, as these sounds should not be boucing of anything before they hit your ears to get the perfect sound.
Hence the best place would be in the doors, with the speakers angled towards the center of the car for the perfect set up.
2. the 6*9 sound will bounce from the back of the car, hitting your ears after the sounds from the front of the car, creating a bad sound stage.
3. Its just not how to set up systems with the correct sound stage.
4. If you are running a sub, that sub creates pressure in the boot. The pressure from that sub willl move the cone of the 6*9. If the 6*9 is trying to play 1 note, while the pressure from the sub is moving the cone. Then the notes will be distorted.
Those 4 points are some of the main points, along with 6*9's are not very good speakers, hence why they so cheap and most expensive are only £200-£250 a pair.
If you have a car packed full of 6*9's and sit in and listen....
Then sit in a car with a set of top end componants or 3 ways in the front door..
You would be amazed at the difference in calerity, volume, and quality.
Thats why companies like Genesis make componants that sell for £2995.00 and all companies develope componant speakers so much...
And why all home cinema kits use a componant principle etc..etc...
Thanks

Hi G Sleigh STi, thanks for the advice, I was going to put a sub in the boot and leave the 6x9's out but it's nice to have boot space now as last car didn't really have any all taken up with ICE!!!
In my last car I made some door pods for my last car which sat on the door card aimed directly at the centre of the car with the tweeters next to the wing mirrors pointing in same direction and yes sounds very good also 6x9's and 2 12" subs in the back, VERY LOUD!!
I have a set of Infinity components up front but was going to amp up the 6x9's and see what sounds like, plus it's hard to hear anything else anyway with a Blitz Nur Spec R and De-cat anyway!
Cheers again
Chris
