Can I ask why? I guess you are aware you can't use such a lighting setup on the road? The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 say the lights can be positioned no more than 40cm from the side of the vehicle, that's the outermost point, usually wheel arches. Most rally pods are placed pretty centrally and therefore don't meet the regulations.

Hmmmmmmmmmm..........

Front driving lights are classed as "optional main beam lamps", so I think it shoule be covered by.........

THIS

Fog lamps are a different matter........

This involves the 400mm dimension

I think pods would be ok as long as the lights went out when main beam went out.

You know what, having read those regulations again I think you're right! Dipping main headlights and front fog lights must confirm to the 40cm rule, the only thing I see is that the auxilliary main beam lights cannot be further towards the edge than the main dipped beam lights.

Strange, I remember dilligently measuring where I could fit some spots in years gone by using a guide from something like CCC magazine and you know what, it might have been just before the 1989 regs came out

There always used to be a caveat stated on auxilliary lighting pods that they were for off-road or competition use only, reason was the total wattage output was above what the law permitted. However I cannot see any reference to maximum wattage in those regs. Does anyone know what the current maximum wattage permitted for driving lights actually is?

Strictly speaking, I think 60W is the legal output for "headlights", whether they be normal, or optional.

All the higher output bulbs I've ever bought have been for "off road use only", but I've never been stopped and questioned about the wattage of my lights.

Having had a car with a couple of Cibie Super Oscars (130W) and a pair of KC Daylighters (150W sealed beam)......all coming on with main beam (switched too of course).......I had more than enough lighting power for my high speed blats following 12 car rallies over the moors

KC's have a reflective range of 4 miles and are a true pencil beam......you can feel the heat off them about 20 yards away!!!!!

I was however stopped by the police and told that my "2 up, 2 down" brackets were illegal, as they stuck out further than the bumper and could cause injury to pedestrians. I wrapped the offending area and the spotlight mounts in foam and rubber, then took them to my local police station to be checked. The police said they were ok.

Oh yeah.......KC's were a straight replacement for the main beam lamps on my Capri 2.8i too.........hah....surprised a few folks with them........especially the ones that didn't dip their lights as they approched me!!!!

I haven't done any road rallies in quite a while, I'd love to do some again when I get back to the UK (whenever that is). Did you used to compete in any 12 cars or roada rallies Marty?

I don't know what the current rule is regards maximum wattage, the 100 & 150W bulbs always used to have a notice that they were for competition use only. The newer bulb types and HID lamps produce significantly greater illumination for a given wattage so the regulations may be pretty meaningless today.
