Meshed my front grill as inspired by DodgeT et al. If anyone want instructions on how to do the mod I can post details.

Note - big thanks to everyone that helped on this BBS.

Nice,i've done something very similar on my MY01 but in stainless steel, its a little less obvious as the lower bumper gap is much smaller than yours. How did you put the STi logo on it ?

Mike, i bought the mesh from a dealer in Liverpool ,Merseyspeeds in Aintree, and i cut it to fit myself it was £20 for around 5 1/2 ft by 2 ft.
I fitted it on the inside of the lower gap and fixed it with small plaster board screws from the outside with plastic screw covers in black to hide the screw heads,i then made a quality intercooler guard from the same stuff and i still have quite a bit left.

The first step is to remove the bumper

this link gives good advice
http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...ht=rear+bumper

and also see this thread when I got stuck!!

http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadID=107388

It is probably usefull to order the clips for the splashguards from Subaru as soon as you can!! They have a tendancy to be unusable once removed. But they cost a few quid.

Ok you have the bumper off

I had trouble with the Number plate until I posted this- You will notice that the sticky plate I have is "reflective"

http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadID=107477

The first thing to do is cut out the existing louvred grill. You will note that I have left 4 uprights remaining and also the holes where the number plate holder is attached. The uprights are drilled through using a 1.0 mm bit. They are used to wire the mesh on.
The Torx fittings help to align your bumper to the beam or allow you to fit the original number plate holder.

I never Intended to do this mod! All I was doing was spraying my bumper, but I decided to do the grill as well.

You will have to use a bit of filler to cover the sides where the surface is uneven. Then sand it down before painting.

I bought my mesh from Halfords ripspeed for £15.00. It comes in bare "shiny" metal but didnt want this look. I measured it up rougly the same size as the open grill and cut it down. So I sprayed the mesh matt black on both sides. I then obtained an STI logo -
available here
http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadID=107751 thanks again guys

The logo was printed out on plain printer paper. The pattern cut out and then while the rest of the mesh is masked. Spray the colour of your choice. I used colorcoat red - because it was free

voila the painted mesh

Now to put it on. Using wire, loop it through the holes in the uprights and tie it at the back of the mesh. This will curve the mesh to the right shape. Take your time to make sure your LOGO is square and looks ok!!

I was going to use self tappers to secure the rest of the mesh. But instead used this much simpler method.

Obtain some Sikoflex from your Partco its about £12.00. Bead it arount the edge of the hole while lifting the mesh (which should be tight) then place the Mesh on and apply the sikoflex over the mesh. Weight it down very firmly so it wont spring up. I left mine to cure for about 8 hours before refitting. Note I didnt trim the mesh after as the bumper went straight back on. Also dont forget to drill through the mesh for the torx fittings.

Is it a good mod?

Well it will protect your radiator of FMIC

I think it looks pretty good - thats why I did it

Its very cheap £30

It was an afternoon without earache from the misses!!

Any questions just post

It does look very good

I did mine a couple of weeks ago using stainless that I aquired from a lad at work. (Thats when I HAD work).

Looks ok in satin black, only spoiled by having to have a front number plate!

I have had and got away with a tiny plate for a while now, but I have a 'rozzer' over the road now, I have put a 'slightly' larger one on to keep 'em off my back...cant be doing with all the agg!

Anyway, thanks for that, looks very good.

Can you post a pic. I like seeing other peoples ideas.

I know exactly what you mean about the number plates. I was in two minds as to use smaller numerals and stick a plate on the valence. But as you say it doesnt take much to upset the ****stabulary

Moles dad,
that looks well smart, did you paint the mesh? Especially like the Morrettes and drivers lights. Prefer the aggresive look on scoobs.
Thanks for posting your pic, hope you get some work soon.

I have already replied on my post of pics, but yes I did spray the mesh...satin black, the main aim was to protect my FMIC as I had noticed lots of stone/insect damage

Thanks for the kind words...see ya 'round.

ps Its the first mod i have ever done and i am very pleased with the results.... especially all the kids giving the "what the f**k is that" expression when they see it.
