AFAIK all UK cars are like that. Changing would be a PITA though, the wiring would be a nightmare to change, although the parts would be easy to get from a scrappy, and are a doddle to remove/refit.

I look at doing this on my V5 TypeR about 5 years ago.
Im afraid it is not a simple plug and replace. (STI5 to P1 compared car to car wiring)
Parts were obviously newer/rarer then and harder to find - so i did not bother, but you will need:
UK Wagon/P1/Forester wiper stalk (For the rear wash wipe control) [Or wire in a separate rear wiper switch].
Any UK Indicator stalk (I think they all have the dimmer control).
The stalk cage (that they bolt to) was differrent if I recall as well, its only a case of taking the steering wheel off and unbolt to change them though.
Apart from that - you also need the plugs from a UK loom as the JDM ones do not swap over. If you can get the first few inches of UK wiring as well, you can splice it in easier using the wire colurs as a guide. Otherwise you will need a friendly Uk owner to park his car next door - for reference when you do it.

There's nothing on my 2000 Clasic estate.

My classic has no dimmer.
The stalks I had were from a 1998 car, I bought a set WITH rear wash-wipe switches from GradeA when I retro-fitted rear wash-wipe to the car, and the "kit" I got from GradeA was a full set of stalks, so I just used the r/h one on my car.

It's me having a bad memory re the dimmer. My twin scroll jdm newage had one. Also my Uk forester turbo My99 has one on the indicator. I sold the TypeR that long ago, it's hard to picture.
The wiper would be an issue if you could only get saloon stalks. But there is a thread where some retofitted a rear jdm screen on a Jk classic and used (iirc) a fiesta rear wiper switch.
So all parts should be easy to find.

Stalks are mounted. Not a sraight fit in the slightest (but I knew that was going to be the case!!). Needed a bracket fabricating as the bolt holes are in completely different postions. Also the cage needed modding to get the indicator canceller to work. The cowling will need to be modded as well but thats a job for another day!!
Next job is wiring, going to have to source some wiring diagrams to help me!! Once I've established which wires are which I can get splicing!!
Whilst I'm at it I'm going to put a permanent live feed to the sidelights so I can ditch that cr@ppy parking light switch as I have something else to go in its place!!
