New head unit problems
Hi all,
I have a 1999 wagon 2000 turbo. Removed the standard Philips radio cassette CD multichanger head unit the other week and replaced it with a new single CD head unit.
Worked OK for a few days but now stops working after a few mins of use. Error message on the JVC head unit says "check wiring & reset". Having checked everything is plugged in ok & resetting it will work ok for a few mins then same error occurs.
Replaced the head unit at Halfords today. Installed it, drove a few mins then get the same bl**dy problem.
Guy in Halfords said if the problem arises it might be due to insufficient/irregular voltage supply?
Forgive my ICE ignorance but I have had the unit working OK for 10 mins with the car sat on the drive engine NOT running. No errors.
Does this mean the voltage thing could be right? Sadly I haven't got a voltage meter. If I get one where should I check?
Any help appreciated.
Cheers,
Ade

I'm guessing the volume is up quite loud when it cuts out??
If so then it sounds like the speaker wires are not wired correctly or a bad earth to the set.
^^ Think you could be onto something here. I'm completely clueless about ICE so please treat me like a idiot (I won't be offended!)
Seems to pack up at medium volume (I think any volume really)?
I have previously discovered the rear O/S speaker wasn't working. removed door card. Unplugged speaker & found a load of weird grease inside connector plug. Cut off plug, bared wires & held on connections of speaker. Still nothing so assumed speaker had died? Left the wires unconnected (but haven't taped/insulated the bared ends). replaced door card without speaker.
Is this likely to affect things (only 3 speakers?)

Thanks mate, I''ll nip out now and have the door card off again and tape the wire ends.
I had to buy a wiring harness adapter to fit between the new unit and the existing connector.

Good news! Reckon taping over the bared ends has done the trick. Just been for a cruise and the stereo has performed perfectly. Hopefully this has done the trick.
Thanks for your help MichaelW - appreciate the guidance.

Thanks 360ste - I will remember that. I thought it must have deliberately been put in (no way it could have found its way inside the connector). I'll get round to replacing the speakers one day and might re-grease (does it have to be something special? ie a conductive grease? (sorry if that's a dumb-*** question!)
