Default Upgrade headlight bulbs?

I have a Year 2000 Impreza facelift with the crystal head lights and to me the headlights seem a little underpowered. Perhaps its because the crystal lights cover most of the bulb with the shield I don’t really know but wanted to ask what upgraded bulbs I could put in to give better light over the standards fitted?

The problem isn't really the bulb-shield, or the bulb itself, it's the lights: they are cr@p!

Uprated bulbs DO make a difference, Halfords are doing some Ultra-Brilliance IIRC 120% uprated, on BOGOF at present.

Osram and Philips also do some 100% uprated ones.

DO AVOID going HID.

A simple search on here will show you why.

These ones?

They don't look half bad. May try some of those myself.

No mate: HID's actually run MUCH cooler than a standard halogen.

The halogen rated at 60W is only producing less than 10W in light, the other 50+W is lost as heat.

That's why a decent HID, rated at 35W, is over three times brighter than the 60W halogen, since little, or no heat is produced.

LOL, you have a thing about melting bulbshields?

The answer is probably NOT, since it's almost certainly metal.

And make no mistake: 100W bulbs are NOT necessarily even as good as the standard 60/55W ones, because even the SLIGHTEST alteration of the filament position will result in poor focusing. And cheap ones are/can be awful.

It's ALWAYS best to buy branded bulbs: Philips, Osram, Ring, GE (Halfords) etc.

Forget PIAA......over expensive.

Sorry it goes back to when I was upgrading the headlight bulb on the bike since some modern bikes have plastic reflectors not glass so was thinking it may be the same for car lights.

Just ordered the Halfords ones. Mind you think my headlights are not lined up properly either so will get them checked when they fit new front headlight since the current one has chipped glass.

Fitted the Halfords ones. Yes the lights seem brighter and whiter but there still pretty poor compared to the old lights on my Mk1 MR2. Having a replacement headlight put in on Monday due to the lenses being chipped then asking for them to check the alignment. I'll see if there’s any improvement after.

Don't expect miracles from Scoob lights. They are the poorest part of a poorly designed body.

Out of interest how do you change the sidelights in a classic?

Unscrew the phillips heads screw on top of headlight[tab from sidelight to stop it slipping forward] and pull the sidelight out to gain access to the bulb holder and remove that with a quarter turn to change bulb.

Perhaps it’s a safety feature. If you can’t see where your going you can’t go too fast
