Default hi all help needed with starting issues

hello all am looking for some help ,have recently bought a classic impreza!!

really like the car but it does have a few issues which i need some help to sort

my problem is the car starts and drives fine ,then at any given time will just cut out and not start back up ???

it turns over but wont fire like it has no spark ?

after 10 mins it will randomly start back up again and drive again fine ..

some days it runs fine others it happens 2-3 times a day

so far have checked earth points, fuel pump is fine too (even when it wont fire still pumps and primes )

cleaned cam and crank sensor up ,fuel filter is good (even bypassed it to check it wasnt blocked )

funny thing is that it will sometimes go from a bump start too

im scratching my head now and can only think that the crank sensor is slightly duff ,
am i right in thinking a faulty cps sensor will cause no spark ???

any ideas or helpful hints will be greatly appreciated as im a mum with kids so cant have it cutting out on us in middle of no-were lol

is there anyone near the wirral area with a good crank/cam sensor they can let me try for a bit to see if it cures it ???
or better still anyone with some good knowledge on them to come look at it for me
will gladly give some beer tokens in return

ta

I had this problem with a car once and that was fuel delivery (fuel pump) the only way to know for sure is to check when it cuts out, intermittent problems are the worst to find.Good luck

Does it have an alarm/immobiliser? Could be a fault with that.

Are there any codes stored when it does it?

As above, search the forum for fault codes as see if the ecu has any recorded, the crank sensor will stop the spark

yeah thanks ,have had the fuel checked whilst it wouldnt start and thats ok , gushes out when its just cranking over ...
hence the reason i assumed it was to do with no spark ... and maybe a dodgy cps sensor ???

no fault codes stored either whilst not starting or after being ran ???

have also done the clear code thingy too just to be safe !!!

its doin my head in hahahahha........

is there anyway of checking the cps sensor to see if faulty
and yes this intermittent problem certainly is a mare

thx for the suggestions anyway

Try cleaning the cam and crank sensor - simple enough to do - all you need is a 10mm spanner and a rag.

Edited to add - I had a similar problem on a previous car - once I'd cleaned both sensors it never did it again (kept it another 5 Years).

yeah unfortunately have already cleaned them both up ,still did the same thing though

crank sensor was a bit scummy due to the typical power steering bottle leak
but the problem remains , so have ordered a new crank and cam sensor from the states and waiting for them to arrive so will update the post once i see if it solves the problem

just means the car doesnt venture out off the driveway as much at the moment
