Default Boot solenoid

On a 1993 legacy estate 2 litre turbo does the boat come with a solenoid as standard? And is there a button on the dash to pop it open?

The reason i ask is this: The previous owner of this car has had ALL door handles and locks removed. The only way in the car is through the drivers door by pushing a button which pops open the door. To get the boot open i have to climb through the car to the boot, pull back the boot trim and push the lever in there to pop open the boot. There is a solenoid there and is mechanicly connected to the boot release catch. There is a black and red wire coming out of the solenoid which i've followed through the car (it wasn't easy believe me) and they go to a push switch on the dashboard. i crossed the wires to energise the solenoid but nothing happened so i'll be buying an electrical tester to find out why but i do wonder if this was all fitted by the previous owner?
