Default Speedo failure!

Hi all,
Just picked up a really nice import sti, its a 99V reg version 6.
Its had the speedo conversion to miles but the speedo constantly returns to zero when i back off the throttle. Its fine under acceleration and at constant speed. Can anyone suggest a start point for investigations?

Regards
Ben

That is a good question, how do I find out? I would imagine electric too because of the speed it drops and comes back

have a look at the gearbox on t he left by t he turbo. is there a big think wire that comes out of it and goes into the bulhead.

if not electric. take the clocks out and check the converter on the back of them. not hard, only a few screws

Hi all, sorry to jump in this thread as this is also my 1st post, and 1st Subaru.
Its a 97 WRX wagon.
My clocks are completely wrong, its telling me im doing 80mph when really im at about 30mph ???
In fact its acting more like a rev counter than a speedo, the trip miles are going up way to fast too, but the odometer is reading and climbing as it should??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Roy
