Default starter motor

has anybody heard of a starter motor flattening a battery when the car is not in use

yes the solinoid can sometimes stick open a bit and cause a current draw hense killing the battery

If it is the solenoid sticking on all starter motors I have worked on you can remove the solenid usually a link to the main body then three bolts to remove the solenoid unit from the starter motor. You will usually find that the grease on the inside of the solenoid and the piece that slides into the solenoid has gone very thick. Clean usiong the likes of WD40 then put a thin smear of a copper based grease on. Re-assemble and it should be working perfectly. done it a number of times on various sizes of starter motor so could save you a few quid.
