Default speedo not working (no CEL though)

Hi

I have a my95 wrx and the speedo has just stopped working, I had a check and noticed the speedo cable had disconnected itself from the converter at the back of the clocks so i reconnected but still no speedo. I attempted to remove the converter from the back of the clocks but it is seriously fitted in position and i dont want to damage anything.

Any ideas what it could be, after some searching i am thinking along the lines of;

a) speedo cable (how would i know if this has snapped? is it obvious?)
b) fuse (where is it located - any pointers?)

anything else i should consider?

By the way the tach, fuel and water temp along with all illumination symbols still work fine, its just the speedo clock itself that doesnt

thanks

the speedo on your car is cable driven, half way between the gearbox and clocks there is a small orangey box it is the converter for the clocks so they read in mph, they have small nylon gears in them and like anything can wear over time, easiest way to test is take clocks out and go for a little drive and see if the small metal thing inside the cable holder spins round, if it does all is well and see if you can get some donor clocks for test......

disconnected the cable and went for a drive, there was no movement in the inner metal rod which i guess means the cable has snapped ?

Now looking at import car parts website, do i need both upper and lower cables ?

Thanks
