Have a look for so-called "uprated" bulbs, rather than just higher wattage.

You also need decent quality manufacturing, since a slight mis-alignment in manufacturing can eqaute to a disappointing loss in performance

Try: Philips Extreme Power, they won the last Auto Express multi-test,
Also GE Megalights, Osram Nightbreakers, and Halfords 90% uprated, once they go back onto BOGOF.

DON'T buy at a local carshop, or Halfords before checking internet prices.

No uprated bulbs will come close to HIDs.

I can say that having just refitted some uprated halogens as a temp measure to mine.

One of these will be fitted as soon as I get a spare 30mins:

HIDs are the best things you can do to the classic headlights, without changing the headlamp unit.

Put these in ours and Mrs Big Pete said they are brighter but that the beam pattern is pants.

I have just realised that I haven't driven our Scooby in the dark for over a year

Nonsense, the beam pattern is CRAP

WORSE than a standard bulb, so all that light, for all that money, is wasted, and dangerously so

Disagree 100% with that comment!

Are you saying a HID kit is better than Retrofitted some Bi-Xenon Projectors into the standard OEM headlamp unit?????????

The best halogen bulbs I've used are PIAA Chrome Mirror White. They provide a pure crisp white light (with no hint of blue) and are a fair bit brighter than standard yellow bulbs. Pricey mind, but I currently have them fitted to my Impreza and I'd never change them for anything else.

Never had a customer go back to halogen with one of our kits yet - and we've sold a few. This includes the one that you fitted

HIDs vs uprated halogens = no contest and people's feedback reflects this:

"Without changing the headlamp unit" - gutting the old headlamps and installing projectors is harder than changing the whole unit. Can't knock the DIY projector installs though Just have come accross one that would work well and be retailable yet though.

So you keep saying. Doesn't alter the fact that a) the kits ARE NOT plug and play, as you claim, and b) they ARE a crap beam pattern.

Live with it.

Learn to read Jeff - single beam kits are plug'n'play and dual beam kits are not. Been over this before, but you seem to have a short memory

But Bob, WHY aren't the H4 kits plug and play? Especially if they are being bought off a GB for scoobs, is it beyond your lads to MAKE them plug and play?

As they are sold, they are difficult for an AVERAGE person to wire: connectors need to be picked out of the plug and replaced in the correct places. Get it wrong, you either get nothing, or you get main beam and dip reversed.

It took me half an hour, and I know my way around a multimeter

Add to that, if the car they are being fitted on has driving lights, these won't work with your HID kit unless THEIR wiring is modded too

And when you've done ALL that, the HID beam pattern is crud and they scatter light every which way

Yes, dips are BRIGHTER, but scatter is awful and main beam is poor.

It's not possible to have the Bi-beam H4 kits as plug and play as they need to be connected directly to the battery and have a relay etc. They require no wiring changes on cars with factory setups, those with optional/retrofitted driving lights may need some slight work. All single beam kits are plug and play, as per all our listings.

30 mins is not that bad to install a HID kit that is not plug and play

You say the lights aren't great, but they must be better than the old halogens as we've never had them back. Your views are at odds with most who absolutely love them, including those in the trade. I remember how happy Zak@Mocom was when he fitted his and went for a test drive

Hope you're having a good weekend
