Default Check Engine Light

Bought a 97 Scooby Impreza turbo today and have intermitent Check Engine Light. Car will drive 30 miles then light will come on. Sometimes only 2 or 3 miles and light come on. Light will also go off after stopping and turning ignition off and back on. Sometimes light will go off by itself.
Any advice ? Serious or not !

Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Scoobypedia / Scoobypedia under the ECU heading shows you how to manually check for error codes.
Personally if it does come on then get it checked (by yourself via the above link) or take it to your local impreza specialist.

Does the car run alright?

Default Engine Check light

Cheers for the prompt reply. First time l have had a Scooby and signed in to a forum site and l am amazed to find the prompt and helpful replies. Taking the car Monday to a garage who looks after my other cars and will stick it on the diagnostics machine to get the fault code. Looks like from what l have been reading as a MAF Sensor or a Knock Sensor. Will let you know the findings. Cheers Mate.

Hiya my 98 does exactly the same.

Check engine light comes on whenever it feels like it but the car feels fine. If you look on Jolly Green Monsters website there is a guide to checking the fault codes and it is really easy to do. Please check it out before you pay someone to read the ecu. If you can operate a pc then you will have no problem doing the scan yourself. Its simply plugging two wires together and turning on the ignition plus the wires are easy to find you cannot go wrong. I did mine in less than ten minutes and gave me two codes replaced both parts and all is now good.

Cheers mate. Had a look on website and like you say sounds simple enough.
Have not had a chance to run test yet as its the usual british summer in Carlisle. "Raining" Looks like a MAF or KNOCK Sensor fron the other replies l have received. Was yours a MAF or KNOCK Sensor ?
When l get round to it l will let you know the result and fix. Many Thanks again.

I would get a new MAF possibly borrow a new one ,reset the ecu and see if the knock sensor fault comes up again as if the maf is faulty it could cause problems for the knock sensor.

Think the ecu stores the code so you will need to reset it once the new part is fitted and all should be good. Good luck

Cheers Steve. Got bloody soaked and scratched to bits fitting new one.
Rained all day here. P.S. Read somewhere that the knock sensor needs torqued to 24nm which l have done. Will let you know the result when reset.
