No motor, but what there IS is a small lever on the catch on the boot lid, which basically makes it so the boot works by key only.
Move it to whatever position it's not in now, and try again

Nope, there's no lever there
It must have something to do with the lock motor/solenoid then, you'll need to strip out the trim around it and check first that the motor has a supply and an earth, then that it's working.

hmm took the trim off and had a look, i think there is nothing getting through to the motor behind the catch, i think my next move is to try and get hold of a second hand one and see if that works.

Errrrrrrrr, no. If there is no feed to the existing motor, how can another work? Your next job is to trace the wiring back and find the break. Probably where the wire enters the bootlid.
You COULD test out the existing motor by using a couple of lengths of wire to live and earth on the battery to check if it moves.

Could be, and it can be tested, as above, unscrew it off the boot, (if it's in any way adjustable, always mark the position with a felt pen etc before removing), and wire it direct to the battery to check.
I was going on what you said: "there's no supply to it", which I took to mean that you can't find a live wire? If so, then your problem will be the wiring, not the motor.
