Unlike European cars Subaru use a permanent live feed to the lamp and a switched earth return.
What model/year is the car ? As this will help the "knowledgeable" who will be along later....
I just hard wired a relay to the live terminal and used the main beam to switch the spots on, as that's when they are needed.

You need a (relatively cheap), circuit tester to identify the wire behind one headlight which is ONLY live when mean beam is selected.
Use this wire to trigger a relay, via terminal 85, with terminal 86 to earth.
then take a feed from the battery to terminal 30, via a fuse if your relay doesn't have one, and finally take feeds to each driving light from terminal 87, taking an earth from each driving light for return.

Further to my post, WITHOUT alcohol : my circuit tester is a small brass-bodied probe, with a very sharp point at one end, a metre plus long lead with a crocodile clip on the other end, and a bulb in it's body. The croc clip is connnected to a good earth, and the sharp probe is used to pierce the insulation of wires you want to test are live, (or touch connectors etc).
Two points to remember:
1. ALWAYS test the probe across the battery before using it to check it's working as it should. This is VERY important.
2. To find your switched live, you really need someone sat in the car selecting main/dip as you tell them, so you can physically SEE the probe go off on dip.
