Default alarm fob

hi, i have a 2002 sti type uk, on the key there are 2 buttons for alarm but dont do anything but also have an alarm fob which does work, why do i have both????

It's just how they came. The remote on the blue rectangular fob is the only one that does anything. It's only with the 2003 onwards models that was sorted.

whats the point of it being on the key then (well both buttons) can they not be programed (?) or do they just not do anything?

The transmitter in the key fob won't talk to the alarm, as I believe the alarm was fitted by the importers. There's a bit of historical shennanigans about it all that I'm not clear on, but suffice to say, that's the way it is...

A JDM car may have had central locking.... we need Thatcham approved gear, by connecting the cl to the Thatcham box, the cl buttons are obsolete.

sorry to drag an old one up...

Does the above none working key have a transponder in it... ie can i just get a normal key cut and use it with the alarm fob

(just bought a 2002 STi )

Got the spare fob and programmed that to work OK with the ridiculous amount of numbers to type.
Fob was about £40 from dealer.

May got a blank key cut to see if the transponder is fitted on an 02 car.... or ask Timpsons if they can emulate it.... Did my MX5 no bother

If its a UK 2002 STi, then it will have a transponder 100%. Not entirely sure if an import will.
