Default Switched supply to PSI3?

Hello,
Has anyone managed to connect a VFD display to a switched supply so that you don't have to manually turn on/off the monitor every time?
The problem is that the +12V is coming from a pin on a 9-pin serial connector the other end of which connects to the OBD under the steering column.
So I have to disconnect a pin from the 9-pin connector and feed it from the clock but my question is how do you 'modify' the 9-pin connector in order to do this?
Thanks

Default

un-screw cover ( if possible ), identify wire, de-solder (?), solder new link wire to clock supply, insulate, re-fix, done (?)
