Lol, fuse, I wish..!!
It's a cable operated boot release (classic Subaru.. ), which is why my alarm can't pop the boot remotely..
I suppose there's less likelihood of it going south with age, like most of the electronic gadgets on cars these days..
Does anyone know if the hatch uses the same method, or have they gone all techno and fitted an electronic release..?

Pressing it makes the sidelights stay on when you switch off the ignition.
Loads of folk don't have a manual, (and some don't read the one they have ), so when they accidentally knock the switch, cleaning the interior, for example, their sidelights apparently can't be switched off.
I've seen folk who have had to resort to pulling the lighting fuse, before asking on here

Hmmmmmm, in that case, I'd be inclined to have a look at both ends of the cable first, make sure that:
1. the nipples on the cable ends are both present, and located in their receptacles.
2. the cable outer is NOT free to move at BOTH ends.
It's not rocket science, it works just like an older racing bike gear lever mechanism.
