Default ECU earthing...

I'm putting a 93 jdm WRX engine into an old VW beetle... but I'm having trouble getting it started.

I think it's to do with ECU earths, as when i have the ignition on the fuel pump doesn't run, but when i earth the ecu wire to the fuel pump relay the pump starts.

could someone please tell me how the ECU is earthed... is it by a wire into it (and if so what one), or is it earthed directly to the chassis via the case?

thanks,
Matt.
