Angry Blobeye headlight removal problems

Hay guys,

Im having a spot of bother - im trying to remove the headlights on my 04 blob but they jsut dont wanna shift.

Ive taken out the 2 top bolts and the side bolt that is hidden by the front grill but no matter if i take it from the grill end first, the other end, top, bottom upside fecking down i just wont come out.

Could someone tell me which way it is mounted into the body so i know if i should pull from one side or the other?

From what i can tell, it doesnt want to move from the outer side as aposed to the side near the grill... stoopid bloody thing, im not happy

Any help would be VERY much appreciated.

Kris

Blob is same as mine isnt it... 04 ? Have you removed the front grill. once that is out of your way remove the two 10 mm bolts from the top of the headlight. theres is another 10 mm bolt hidden behind the bumper remove it. remove a couple of the pop tabs holding the bumper on to allow the bumper to flex. once that is complete pull out on the inside edge of the headlight and then the outside edge.

They take some pulling

Go easy with them

edited to say re-read and it is an 04 Doh ...

There are 2 ball sockets (yellow & white bits in the pic below) that the headlight fits into which makes it difficult to remove but it can be done but you have to be forceful while being gentle if you get my drift

Well the stupid feckign thing still wont come out. i can get it slightly removed from the top left mount but not the bottom one at all. To top it all i snapped a clip from the front grill so im all together in a really bad mood now

The fact that to replace a sidelight you need to take the headlight out is without a doubt one of the worst designs ive ever seen in a car... piece of fecking crap bollox!

/rant over

Looks like ill be selling some brand new LED sidelights and a H1 HID kit... cos i wont be able to fit the fecking things

I wouldn't give up just yet...the headlamps are designed to be removed...just need the right technique

You'll need to remove them to change blown OE bulbs at some point anyhow....better now than when you have blown bulbs IMHO.

Anyone local able to give you a hand? Subaru will tell you/show you how to remove them in a jiffy

Its the technique that is the problem, as ive not had the car long and not done it before i dont know which its to push/pull in the right direction.

Im not kiddng, i was there for an hour today trying all different angles and it didnt move out of that bottom corner... once the top is popped out there is nothing to get hold of to pop the bottom out without feelign like its gonna snap.

I even tried the "screwdriver covered in insulation tape" down the side of it and it still wouldnt come out with a bit of push on it.

Needless to say i would be happier for a garage to break it and replace it as apposed to me doing it myself and being even more out of pocket. I just wanted something easy to fit taht i could do myself and typical even this turns out to be a PITA. I just dont want to have to pay a garage to remove a headlight for me, i mean... talk about overkill

its too late now to have another go so ill have to leave it for another week before i decide if im gonna attempt it again or just cut my losses, loose some money on postage etc and see what i can get back selling the kit and the LED's here on the forums

I have a subaru specialist up the road from me... its just finding the time when they are open and im not at work hence the weekends are best for me to do anything like this.

Whole thing has just pissed me off and put a real downer on me fitting things like this. As what should be a simple job has turned into a nightmare cos i dont know what im doing.

Well after 2 more hours this morning i managed to get as far as popping the headlight out by pushing on it from the back instead of trying to pull it

Then came the even worse stage of trying to remove the leads on each of the bulbs... either subaru cars are built together using super glue and a sledgehammer or someone is playing a very mean trick on me. I couldnt for the life of me remove ANY of the plugs... this meant that i couldnt even remove the headlight far enough to change the sidelight let alone think about fitting the HID kit At this rate, if i carry on trying i'll have the first headlight removed around christmas time!

Of course you dont want to rip too hard at the wires incase you slip and end up pulling part of it out the socket, but the sockets would not move at all.

Ive come to the conclusion there is a reason people start up garages... its cos wombles like me cant do things like this

I think i've spent enough time trying this fooking headlight removal bollox, and its clearly above my ability to fit this kinda thing myself so ill just have to sell it on here and hope someone buys it

H1 HID kit anyone?

Before taking the lights out run some protective masking tape under the light as well as around the very top corner of the wing. Very easy to chip or scratch the paint when the ball sockett joints finally give.

Be nice if i could get to that stage, but i know what you mean. from the little bit it moved i could see how easy it would be to scratch something.

I wont be attempting it again i dont think... i admit defeat

I understand you giving up...but...have you considered what you are going to do when your bulbs do need replacing?

I might be worth having the kit fitted by an auto-electrician, shouldn't be any more than an hours worth of work...

You'll then have HID lights and not have to worry about changing your bulbs again for a very long time (HIDs last 10x times longer than Halogens).

Just a thought.

I'll have to cross that bridge when i come to it. i did think about fitting the ballast somewhere else and try not to remove the headlight but i dont think thats an easy option either.

I got the kit cos i thought it was something i could do myself - having to pay someone else means more time/money which kinda makes it less appealing to fit.

Hopefully someone will feel sorry for me and buy it off me, otherwise i'm hugely out of pocket which im rather unhappy about.

I'm sure you can understand my frustration... when things dont go according to plan (especially after so many attempts) you can only take so much before going mad

Hope I'm not stating the obvious, but here goes....

The plugs have barbs which locate in slots in the headlamp moulding, so don't just pull off.
You need to ease them apart with a narrow bladed screwdriver and then pull, it really needs three hands....

HTH ( a bit !)
