Not sure which model year you have? but on the classic model you need to get the door card off first. Peel the plastic sheet back starting from the bottom right hand side. Be careful of the black silicone sealant, stains easily (protect your interior/clothes)
Then with the door open remove the 3 screws on the side that hold the latch mechanism. Along with the metal rods. You will need to pull the little plastic clips to one side to remove the rods. Just remember which way they go back.
Once that is done you should be able to pull the whole unit out. You will have to unplug the electrical connector from the switch too.
Its only the passenger doors that have the soleniod & the drivers door has a lever switch at the bottom. It may vary between the later models but thats what I have seen on the classic pre98 models.

It's the drivers door on a UK 94, I've disconnected the plug to the lock and when I bridge it, the locking works, so the lever switch (not a solenoid then ?) is suspect. I was hoping I could remove it without having to mess about with the lock & various bars etc sounds like I have to give it a go
