How do you run electrical stuff off a car battery?
Just wondered as i have a spare not totally dead recharged car battery off my RX7 now having bort it a new one for being so lonely in the cold wet months) & my mind was wandering forwards to the car shows, where i can recall a few folks powering lights & even fridges (mmmm cold beer ) off spare batteries.
So idiots (that'd be me) guide to how to set up such a cunning plan?
Cheers folks

It depends what you want to acheive.
Some cars can accept a second battery (popular here for 4x4's used in the desert) to power ancillaries (fridge, lights etc) while camping. These are permanently fitted to the car (weight of the car not being of paramount importance!) and require a split charging system to ensure that the primary 'car' battery is not drained by the ancillaries, so the engine will still start in the morning (bump starting a 3 ton 4x4 on sand not being too easy!). The split charging system will charge the primary battery first, then the secondary battery when the first is 'full'.
This is also used in some high end ICE systems, where they want to use the system with the engine off (sound-offs, McD's carpark etc) and still be able to drive away afterwards.
If you just want to run stuff externally to the car when parked up, just carry the battery (and the AC inverter) in the boot, unload and connect everything up. The second inverter shown above has battery post clamps included for direct connection to the battery terminals. This second battery would obviously have to be charged using a mains charger before you needed it!
If you dont want to nuy the inverter, you could just buy a 12V fridge/cooler box thingy.

You need an inverter to step up the voltage from your car battery's 12v to the required 240v
Try one of these:
