Fog light wiring
My fog lights only work when main beam is on. Does anyone know if this is a common problem or has someone rewired the light switch?

Sounds as if the previous owner(???) has rewired it so they come on when you select main beam. Why people do this is beyond me: the foglights only illumonate about 20 foot of road, so why use 'em as driving lights?
Look for an extra relay under the bonnet. You'll probably need to remove the lights to reinstate the original wiring, which has probably been linked to, using scotchloks.

Are you sure they're still foglights? If someone had replaced them with driving lights or spot lights they'd still look similar to the standard clear glass foglights but the light pattern would be different. Someone rewiring them to come on with main beam would make sense then.
If not then why don't you fit spot lights rather than changing the wiring? That way you get some lights that are actually useful rather than a pair of useless foglights you'll use for ten minutes once every ten years.
This assumes you're not one of those tossers who drives round with foglights on all the time or whenever it starts drizzling of course.

Hadn't thought of that, Chelspeed and jjones, I just assume people can recognise one from t'other.
Foglights: they will be branded "Subaru" somewhere on the glass.
Driving lights: will be branded PIAA, Cibie, or Hella on the glass/reflector inside the glass, depending on which one they are, if that makes sense?
