I'd just left work last night when the engine check light on the dashboard came on for a second and then went again. I'm sure that I'm just being paranoied but what could have caused this and should I get it loked at?

If it came on and went out within a second or 2 and hasnt come back on since, ignore it. If it makes a habit of doing it, then worry about getting it checked.
