Question Rear Fog light in STI Cluster.

I know this has been done to death, but I can't find any exact details or pictures.
So, can anyone who has fitted fog lights either into the unused space or in the off-side reversing position post details of how they did it (inc source of red high-intensaity bulbs if used), preferably with pics.

Thanks,
Martin.

If you ring Dave Hollamby in the Service dept at Gatwick Subaru on 01293 429800, he will explain. Basically the rear fog was wired into the O/S rear cluster in place of the reverse lamp, I then bought two red painted bulbs from a local retail shop (Halfords could not help). These are advertised as for interior/display use only, but are 21W and shine red through the clear lens. Don't know how long the paint will last though.

Bulbs are £9.99 from

http://www.revolution.eu.com

You have to call as they dont list them on their site. Red LED bulb.

If your is UK car then all you do is wire your fog light wiring to the reverse lamp bulb holder. I think this can be done by swopping the wires round in the white plastic block. JDM's are a little different.

Why are you putting it in the reverse light?

If you look at the drivers side cluster, there should be a compartment called R. Make a whole in that and the rear fog light fits in there.

That way you have both reverse lights, and the fog light is part of the cluster. Now it looks like a normal cluster

Money,
looking at the STI light next to the UK one, the external reflector seems to be where the fog light would be.
Is there a reflector inside the cluster where you add the fog light?

Thanks,
Martin.

Martin

That is what put us off drilling a hole, as we were not sure what pattern of light you would get through or round the reflector. Maybe Money has some more info?

Money,
If you use th "R" compartment - is this where the normal rear light is located?
If so with the rear fog on you effectivly have no brake light on that side as there is no partition betwwen the rear fog and the brake light!!

Dyney, its just a compartment.

I will get pics of a mates car (as mine is off road at the moment). He was the one who told me about the conversion. He actually put fog lights in both sides.

he has both brake lights as normal

Has 2 fog lights which light up as normal.

I believe half of the P1 guys have done it to.

Obciously dont make a massive whole! Just need a whole so the light can fit in.

So does it have a partition to separate it from the main rear light then?

Would like to see pics

Right,
I've found the P1 owners club site, and the mod thread with pics . Had to register, but I can live with that. Did think of replying to M0NEY's post on that thread just so he thinks he's being stalked (I do appreciate your help M0NEY).
What I should have done first, and have now done is remove the brake light and have a feel with a cable tie. This has confirmed for me that the space behind the external reflector is one with the space behind the brake light.
So swapping the harness from the UK lights to provide wiring and high-intensity bulb for the fog light, will, if I drill and file a suitable opening, result in a fog light which will illuminate the same space as the brake light. And, I won't have to hunt for a red bulb .
Feel free to correct me if I've got that wrong.

Martin.

forgive me but aren't you saying your fog light will illuminate your brake light? i.e. it will look like you are braking when you put your fogs on.

This means you would need to find a way of sperating the light so that when your fogs are on your brake looks like it is always on

Hi Guys
In reality this doesn't actually happen.
If you put your rear lights on, the lenses look normal with the correct brightness associated with that wattage of bulb.
When you press the brake pedal, the lenses look normal with the correct brightness associated with those bulbs, and when you put the foglamp on, you can see this is in a different part of the lens to the brakelamp and so easy to tell the difference between the brake light and the foglight.
For MOT purposes you have to be able to differentiate between the lamps. This happens if you wire up the fogs in the way that's been mentioned

Fitted some STi's clusters at the weekend, so interested in this mod.
I have access to the P1 site but at work I cannot view the images.

However, the STi cluster is completley different to the UK cluster when illuminated.

The UK Stop/Tail only lights 1/3 of the red segment i.e a tiny section on the outside edge of the light. The midle 1/3 is a reflector and the inside 1/3 being the Fog light.

The Jap spec Stop/Tail lights pretty illuminates the hole red segment, due to this area not being partitioned, as on the UK.

If the Foglight where to be mounted in the same location as a UK the definition between Stop Light and Fog Light would be pretty poor.

IMHO you would be better off using the reverse light with a 'Red' Silvertec bulb. You could even adapt it to fit 2 bulbs in the same reverse light cluster. Bujt only 'if like me' if you don't think 1 is bright/clear enough. Fitting 2 may also help with the pink'ness.

Converted the reversing light on the O/S to a fog (sounds technical, but all you really do is move a bulb holder). And fitted one of these....

25 LED 15mm Bayonet - RED (fits in standard 15mm Bulb Holder)

Very please with it too.

Over the last couple of weeks I have tried the following :

Red 21W bulb - Shines pink and you can see it through the clear STi cluster
Red 'SilverTec' Bulb - This is a Red Bulb Chromed. Shines pink, a little dimmer then the above (not really much brighter then the tail lights). Because it's chrome you cannot see it when off.
Red LED single Filement 'Standard Version' (from www.ultraleds.co.uk) - As with Silvertec, not really bright enough and clear when off.
Red LED single Filement 'Superior Version' (from www.ultraleds.co.uk) - Twice as bright as the above, and spot on. Nice and Red and Nice and Bright.

thinking of getting the same for the indicastors now, because the luminance and colour is superb.

I hope this helps......

Cheers,
got a bit sidetracked and never got round to fitting mine. I did drill a hole for it to go in with the rear light, but too far over and it's too shallow (oops), so I'll have to try one of the Superiors and see if it fits the space or whether I need to make a spacer.

Well, I finally got round to fitting them yesterday . I started with the fog light in its normal position but wasn't happy with the light it was giving, so I swapped it with the reverse lamp (with the bulb removed), and it works a treat.
I'll post some pics in the gallery.

Martin.

It doesnt mate because the whole of the red part of the lens lights up when the lights on like you say you wouldnt see the brake light or only very slightly, mines in the reverse light.Really dont see why theres so many threads about this subject it really is sooooo easy to do.

I wonder if I used the reverse lamp hole for the fog, I could relocate the reversing light to the side of the indicator. White lens!!

I do a fair bit of night driving/parking

I dont think that it would be much use though, as the lense on the rear reversing light disperses the light different to the indicator i think.
