Question

I'm thinking of upgrading the lights on my car (98 uk Turbo).

I'm considering HIDs or Morettes with HIDs - Any view on which is best (Forget the cosmetics of Morettes, as thats a personal viewpoint)

I'm thinking of the lens here primarily, but also the dip/main beam functionality....

Also, any recommendations on where from and type ?

Cheers,

Mark

I have the standard my95 lights and HID's with no main in them, but I have the PIAA's as main beem with 120watt bulbs it's the nuts as you don't need main beam all the time now to see

Well worth the money

Try Autolamps online they are the best for price and kit quality

I took a look at autolamps, but everything appears to be US based (i.e. Dollars).

Thumbs up

I've got the morettes with Philips Vision Plus in the outers, standard bulbs in the inners, and Scoobysport HID driving lights, which are real night into day jobbiies!
All on a '98 car.

Cool

After a bit of searching, I've done that !

Thanks.

I'd like a kit that does main and dip - Any ideas ? - I'm using the standard headlamps at the mo, with philips plus bulbs, but I could switch to Morettes, I guess....

Huxley, you said that you have the kit (I assume from autolamps), but have 130W bulbs for main beam - I thought the kit was 'effectively' replacement bulbs (i.e. a xenon fitment, that inserts into the original bulb holder in the lens). If so, where did you mount the 'extra' main beam bulbs ?

Cheers,

Mark

Thumbs up

Autolamps do a "Hi-Low" kit with HID for both main and dip on an H4 fitting.

I haven't personal experience, but they are supposed to be pretty good.

Huxley- Sorry Mate, I was being a bit thick ! I've just re-read your post properly (at home Now!)....

Basically, you've the standard headlamp unit, fitted with a H4 DIP HID replacement (i.e. NO main beam), BUT your PIAA driving lamps come on with main beam (I'm guessing that it leaves the DIP beam on), which gives a good enough main beam....

OK

I've been told that the HIDs are not necessarily ideal as main beam, because of the warm up time, but I've read that they're as good as halogen at first turn on anyhow, plus I'd replace the fogs with 130w Cibies, so I think I'll probably go for the Hylow kit from autolamps - giving HID dip and HID main, with Cibies on main too - should be plenty ...

I'll confirm with autolamps that this is viable -

Thanks for your help - This goes for Alcazar too

Hi MArk the 130 watt lamps are the PIAA spots that come on when you hit main beam.

The only thing to remember is that on the old scoobs is that they switch hi lo on the lamp - neg side not pos like on most cars for some reason!!!!!

Thanks for the warning - I came unstuck with that when I commoned some LEDS for my Extended Knocklink !

Actually, I'll go for the PIAA rather than the Cibies, as they seem more reliable !

Thanks - Nice looking Motor - what size are the wheels, as I'm still on the original 16" rims - see my site

Also, is that mod for PIAA driving lamps, or a headlamp mod ?

Headlamp with PIAA's fitted to stop voltage drop when starting with the headlamps on helps to make the PIAA's last longer.

As for the wheels they were 17" Darwin Racing rims but have now gone over to 17" Rimstock Diablos from TSL

Arrow

I've got HID dipped with Morrettes on my MY01 (let's face it, the standard lights on the bugeye weren't much better than on the classic). Mine are Philips based units (got them from Scoobysport) - I wouldn't go back to anything else now. Well worth it IMHO.

Lads why does the autolamps website say that their units are for off-road use only?

I think it's something to do with "E" thing me thinks and not Road Legal

There are rules and regs for Gas Discharge headlights on cars.

IIRC it says on there web site??

Yes it does - HIDs have to be self-levelling and self-washing....

'apparently'

They won't invalidate your insurance, they may contravene Construction and Use Regs and would probably not pass SVA but they will probably pass an MOT. Just do it. Life's too short to worry about these sort of petty bureaucratic bollox.
