Subaru Lights Are Crap - is it the loom?...
#1
I personally think my headlights are crap (MY 98 UK Car) - Has anyone measured the voltage across them to see if there's much of a drop?...
On my MK2 GTI there was a 2v drop through the std loom, so I made my own up switching the power dirctly from the battery, giving them the full 12V! Uprated the bulbs and it shone like lighthouse.
Anyone thought or tried this on a Subaru?.....

We use to do this with Audis years ago.. basic relay system. Bloody thing made a hell of a difference!!! Then stick 120/100 bulbs in for real fun. Works great on horns to.
good idea.
very easy to make up for less than a tenner.

The PIAA's are a 55/60 input and 100/110 output so no need for rewiring or uprating fuses etc.. Some dealers will supply 'em. if not demon tweaks and the likes will sell them but they aint cheap at 50 quid a pair and don't last for ever either... I've uprated my headlamps and put in a pair of 100w H3 bulbs in the driving lamps. 420w output total... brilliant! (no pun intended)
Oh you can get 110/130w output bulbs to

There was a thread on here about "relaying headlights", about 2 months back. Try a search for it.
Very interesting, and informative. Worth doing, apparently.
I'm gonna do mine when the weather is a bit molder:
Meanwhile, my Philips Vision Plus bulbs are OK.
I have Morettes on a '98 car, which do make a big difference, actually putting the light where it should be, not all over the place.
I also have Scoobysport HID driving lights which are just the dog's!!
Two tips:
1) Make sure your lights are properly aligned. Even slight changes can make a lot of difference.
2) Keep the lenses clean, especially at this time of year!
BTW: higher wattage bulbs, such as PIAA are dear, and CAN suffer from short lives!!!!!

I had a MY94 and the lighting was appaling. It was mainly due to reflector design of the lights themselves, upradted bulbs helped a little, but not much. In the end I got a set of morettes, with uprated bulbs, much much better.

I've put the Philips visionplus bulbs in my sti7, and they're much better than the originals, (I can actually see now). Same voltage / wattage etc as the original bulbs as well so no chance of damaging the loom.

I was having the same problem with my MY98.
I ordered a set of Osram from powerbulbs.com and the results are fantastic!
You get super-quick shipment, cheap prices and a free set of Phillips Bluevision sidelamp bulbs all for £19.50

Philips Vision things but they're still pretty pony tbh
However, HID Spots in stead of fogs more than make up for it
Only ever on dipped in town or when there's an oncoming car.
You could probably get an H4 HID replacement kit for around £400 - anyone got one on a classic?

I'm going to check the voltage across the bulbs at the weekend..... See how much of a drop there is.
Making your own loom up is very easy, you can also wire it so on full beam it always switched the dipped beam part of the bulb on giving even more light!....
As for Morettes, what are those? (excuse my ignorance)
Matt.

1) dip and main on at once: in theory ,this gives more light, but the extra is only dip beam, and you run the risk of overheating the reflector, the bulb base, and any wiring, by effectively doubling the heat to be dissipated. Personally, I wouldn't bother.
2) Morettes: also called "quad conversion". Look on Graham Goode site for pics.
Have a look at Tim H's thread for details of volts drop etc.

As mentioned before, try adjusting the alignment and height of the lights. I know for a fact that most cars leave the factory with very a low angle, say a dip beam of 30 feet when it should be 75ish feet, even on the 0 electric adjustment setting.
You'll be suprised how much difference it will make.
