Im currently in the process of doing a phase 2 face lift on my MY98 type r and wondered what the implications of wiring the driving lights were.As i understand it they are meant to come on with main beam which the current fogs/driving lights dont.Has anyone done this conversion and how easy was it?
cheers in advance

I have a '98 car, although it's standard UK machine.
Fitting: they should come with fittings which allow them to bolt straight into the bolt-holes for the OE fogs. If they are the ones with the small diameter lights peeking out of holes in covers, I can't help any more, I'm afraid, as I've never examined any.
Wiring: buy a standard 4, or 5 terminal on/off relay, preferably with fuse. Halfrauds, carshop, or car-electrics will supply.
You'll also need some fairly thick (28/010) wire, about 6 metres is plenty, some thinner stuff, (14/010), about 2 metres, 4 ring terminals, and about 10 spade terminals with covers. Oh.....and a Scotchlok. You may also need a "piggy-back" connector if your relay only has 4 terminals. I'm assuming you have zip-ties, pliers, stanley knife etc?
(If your relay only has 4 terminals, use a "piggy-back" connector at terminal 87)
Identify which wire behind the n/s headlight supplies the main beam. Scotchlok a piece of the thinner wire to it, lead this to relay terminal 85 with a spade connector.
Take a further piece of same wire from relay terminal 86 to earth, or battery -ve, via spade and ring connectors.
Check that relay clicks when you select main beam, with ignition on, and/or engine running, and clicks again when you de-select.
SWITCH OFF IGNITION:
Now run a piece of the thicker wire from battery +ve to relay terminal 30, ring and spade.
Thye final two pieces of thicker wire go from relay terminal 87 to the light units, with two more back to earth, or battery -ve,(preferred).
If what you have are HID, the two wires mentioned above go to the ballasts, with the thick special wires from ballasts to lights.
Take your time. It took me about 1.5 hours including fitting.
My relay sits on top/rear of the battery, with a VERY short supply to it from battery.
I've seen MUCH neater installations, but haven't got round to copying them yet:

Good instructions, Alcazar.
I'm just about to fit my P1 driving lights and that will be invaluable.
Daren, if you require any pictures of the mounting brackets, drop me a mail and I'll send some your way.

After examining the lights they have 2 bulbs in them (what are they for) also 2 wires on the back of the lights have tags on them one says (dip) and the other says (Main beam) also they dont have the white plug on one of the wires which id have assumed plugged into the standard foglight wiring loom. Can some one explain to me how to wire these up and what i need.I know Alcazar has given me a detailed description but im unsure about these 2 wires.Any help would be very much appreciated

Sorry, Steve. Only just seen your post. Don't pop into lighting all that often as I'm bright enough already!
I'll drop you a mail with some pictures in a moment.
Daren
2 bulbs in each light?
Just for reference, my lights have one bulb each. Two wires, one red, one black, run from the back of the bulb holder and terminate to a white plug connector.

Is there a maker's name anywhere on the lights you have?
I'd be very interested, as they sound like what a lot of people need: better dips as well as better main beams.
If you have both dip, and main, in the same light, you're going to need two relays:
One will control current from battery to the main beams, and will be triggered by a wire scotchloked to the main beam wire behind your headlights.
The other will do the same for dips, but will have it's wire scotchloked into the dip beam wire.
I wouldn't advise simply wiring from existing feeds direct to the new lights, as the wiring may not be capable of carrying that sort of current, and the fuses will certainly blow.
Unless you intend to have the lights switched by the foglight switch as well, you can forget the foglight wiring, just tape it up out of the way, and against water ingress.
Still can't help with the brackets: can you put up a pic of what you have, or mail me one, then I could perhaps suggest a home-made bracket from aluminium strips? Dimensions of any fixings on the lamps would help.
Pity you're not abit closer. This one intrigues me.

Would it help if I sent you some pictures/dimensions of my OEM lights/brackets?
They will be going on the car fairly shortly, but whilst they're kicking around I'll do what I can to assist.

Alcazar, the driving lights are made by hella Have sent you a picture via email. They look like this without the brackets fitted to the back. there are 2 bulbs in the light, one is a small halogen type bulb in the centre and the other is directly underneath and is just a push in bulb the socket this bulb sits in has no wires attatched and looks like a blade connector. there are 2 wires coming from the back of the driving light, one is red and one is black, there is also a tag on these wires on one it says main beam and the other says dip beam. there are no connectors on the end of these it is just a clean cut off the wires!

Just sent you one picture, but the file size was quite high so I've probably gummed up your mail account. Sorry 'bout that.
I'll compress the other two a bit more.
Steve
No problems with the pictures. Do your light units look anything like mine? I'm guessing as there's two people who have some 90mm Hella's with 2 bulbs in each light that there are variations in the design.
Still got one bulb in mine.
