driving along last night and the lights external and internal (but not the stereo) started pulsing..this would last for 5-10 mins..then would be perfectly normal for another 5-10 mins and then start pulsing again...turn the engine off and just running off the battery and they are fine...

as my technical knowledge of anything is jacksh1t any constructive ideas would be welcome!

Have a dealer, or auto-electrician check out your alternator.
It sounds as if the voltage stabiliser has gone US.
