To answer the question, dip are H1 and main HB3.

PIAA or the HID effect bulbs are a waste of money. Used PIAA and they blow continuously. I am running Philips Vision Plus (£18 pr) in the dips on both our STi's, and last week swopped just one of them out on my car for an HID effect bulb (£50 or so per pr) to do a direct comparison and ran it 30 miles in the dark to try it. Result? You couldn't see any difference whatsoever between that and the Vision Plus.

The only higher output HB3's I have seen apart from PIAA are the 100w rallye ones on Powerbulbs's site.

The STi has very good lamps, the best of any Inpreza, as standard anyway. The standard lamps are easily equal to MY01 Morettes.

I upgraded mine to PIAA H-107's (3950K) and H-214's (4150K). Not cheap, but worth it. Changed the sidelight bulbs while I was on. Ignore the manual about removing the light assembly, just take of the air intake and both sides can be done using long nosed pliers.

Indicator bulbs are a different matter. I have some Philips SilverVision's to put in, but I can't find the time to remove the grill and light assembly, just for a couple of bulbs.

Dave,

as ever a very thorough answer.

Ill check out powerbulbs to see what sort of prices they are up at. I also did not realise how expensive the PIAA ones were !

Strange you should say that Dave as I ran PIAA's in my MY00 for 2 years and 45K miles without any problems. The new ones have been in the STI for 5 months and 11K miles (not all in the dark I admit) and no problems so far.

I must admit that PIAA driving lamp bulbs were an issue, but I think that it also had a lot to do with the design of the PIAA lamps.

It seems to vary from car to car, but there seem to be more people had problems with PIAA bulbs than have not.

I also think they are overhyped, and definitely overpriced - Auto Express tested them in their bulb test and gave them a zero.

It was an eye opener to me trying the HID effect bulbs and Vision Plus side by side and seeing no perceptible difference in either beam colour or output

I had the PIAA driving lamps in my old MY00 turbo, and still had the original bulbs in there and working 2 years / 20,000 miles later. Don't know what the fuss is

Dave, do you reckon the VisionPlus bulbs are worth it over the standard MY02 STi lights? (I'm just wondering whether to upgrade).

Cheers,
Iain

IMHO Vision Plus are worth fitting, particularly as the H1 are only about £18 per pair, so cost effective.

Iain,

Got H1 and HB3's (with some free Side lights !!!) some from Powerbulbs.com. Fitted them no problem, just had to remove the air intake from the Off Side.

Bulbs make pretty good lights into excellent once. Really impressed. £40 and 1/2 hour well spent I think.

Sorry I have no piccys but its very easy to do,
