New in this forum. Not new in any other forum or in mechanics....
But, this is the first Subaru (we actually bought this one couple of weeks ago) I am working any problem solving on. The two others we owned was pre 2001 MY.
Its a 2009 2,5Tdi with xenon low beam. High beam is regular halogen, H7.
And tonight driving in dark - I actually first notised I had xenon and that, it was pointing right up! So the automatic leveling doesnt work.
I checked the fault codes before we bought it but I didnt even open the hood.....
There is nothing to find in my Autel, that has anaything to do with headlights. No fuses either.
Both headlights point to the sky.
An usual problem? Where to start?
I tried to look for a schematics for the headlights - but havent found a good page for reservpart with exploded views.
I would be very thankfull for any help.

Just to confirm a "2009" Impreza could be a Model Year (MY) 2009 or 2010.
10th Character of the VIN will be a "9" for MY09 or "A" for MY10.
Saying it's a 2.5Tdi would suggest it's either a 2.5 Turbo direct injection or a 2.5 Turbo Diesel injection both of which do not apply.
The 2.5L WRX model has an EJ255 engine, the WRX STI model an EJ257 engine, both with injection into the inlet manifold, and the the Diesel model, with direct injection, is only a 2.0L EE engine.
Attached, as pdf's, are the headlight automatic leveling wiring diagrams for both MY09 Petrol and Diesel models
Usual problems are that one or both of the headlight leveling sensors, attached to the Lefthand front/rear suspension lower control arms will either have ingressed water via the plug (corrosion/damaged pins) or the operating linkage has failed in some way (seized/snapped).
If it's a MY10 it may only have the rear sensor as the system was redesigned for some models.
It was manufactured October 2008.
So deffinetly MY 09.

We'll get it up on a lift and take a look if there is some damage to be found on any of the sensors (front or rear).
It had been standing for a while, without usage, so definetly a possibility for some water damage.

Ok, update.
Checking out the levelling sensors and linkage:
Rear linkage moved freely as well as the sensor itself was moving, turning freely. Nothing to be seen in the connector - both sides.
Front sensor was very stiff in the sensor end - but linkages were moving freely.
All linkages and the linkage arms are whole.
So I ended up changing the sensor itself. China copy.... a bit stiff it too.
When I ordered the sensor, I removed the old one. And of course the warning light went on.
After changing the sensor in the front - the automatic levelling does still not work when the engine is started.
So, the thing I do not understand, is, why is there no fault codes? Its obviously a electric issue - or the motor/motors on the headlights are not working.

Two questions:
Is the headlight beam adjustemt done manually?
The lights do not move when I start engine. - Or is it because I just did a adjustment?
One more:
Do you think the reinitialization neads to be done after the battery has been flat? We have an other one 2009 (Forester) here for service and MOT - and I cannot see the beams moving when the engien is runnig. At the moment the front wheels are up in the ear even. The battery has been flat on it too.
