Morette lights
I've spent hours trying to get the main beam (inner lamps) to work on my classic. The closest I've got is the morette main beam coming on whilst on dipped and going out on main beam.
I am aware the Subaru works on a switched earth set up but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to wire the relay up.
By the looks of it, hopefully not a wiring fault on my car, the main beam wire on my headlights is 12v when on dipped and then switches to 0v when on main. Does anyone here know how I can wire a relay up to be off when being fed 12v and to work when the 12v is switched off.

I'm pretty sure I've tried that already, that's basically switching the live and earth wires around? Could you dum it down a bit for me just so I can be sure I've already tried what you've suggested. Thanks

normally closed means the contacts have continuity through them when the coil of the relay is de-energised.
So power the coil of the relay from the main beam, when it is on the relay will energise opening the contacts from the full beam, and when switching from main - full the relay will denergise on the coil shutting the normally closed contacts and bringing on the main beam.
I am just going off what your first post says, I have never seen these lights, or wired them, nor do I know what relay you have so this is just a description of how I would wire them to work based on what you have said

I think the problem I am having is that the relay supplied is a 4 pin type and doesn't have a normally closed pin on it which i believe is 87a I've only got 87 which is normally open. Unless you have another solution I will try and get a 5 pin relay tomorrow and try again.

Did you get the 5-pin relay?
The one you want is here: http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.e...ays/relays.php Type 3.
Or buy one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUTO-CAR-L...item1c209d3025, and use it to find which wire, behind your lights, is live when the main beam is selected, BUT NOT LIVE WHEN DIP IS SELECTED.
If you can find that wire, use a standard relay as follows:
Relay terminal 85: from that live above.
Relay terminal 86: to a decent earth.
Relay terminal 30: FROM battery +ve via a fuse.
Relay terminal 87: two wires to main beam bulbs.
Don't forget an earth from the main beam bulbs too

Hi all. I have all four lights working as they should be. I tried the 5 pin relay but made no difference. Basically what was needed was the earth wire going to an ignition live as the Subaru uses a switched earth so the relay doesn't need a second earth wired in.
I originally had the standard wires originally going to the relay.
30 - direct to positive battery
86 - ground earth
87 - went to positive on main beam lamps
85 - went to the main beam wire on the standard headlamp (H4 bulb holder)
What the wiring should be to work on Classics, unsure of other models is:
30 - direct to positive battery.
86 - went to 12v live when headlights turn on, I spliced into the low beam live wire for this on the H4 bulb holder.
87 - went to positive on main beam lamps
85 - went to the main beam wire on the standard headlamp (H4 bulb holder)
To clarify, the relay needs all four pins going to live and does not need to be earthed as the car's standard headlight wiring system will do this.
