Default Maximum boost?

with the imminent arrival of a boost controller, all being well.

what would be the recommended maximum boost level to run and still be reliable / safe?

i`m buying the controller to hopefully sort what appears to be a boost problem with the cheap manual controller and would like to increase the boost slightly whilst i`m at it.

the car is currently running :

OEM Air box with ITG panel filter
Prodrive turbo back system - fully decatted
Prodrive WR Sport (RB5 factory option) ecu upgrade.

it also has the hardened intercooler pipes also.

its currently running standard boost and with the WR sport add ons should be running about 250ish or thereabouts at a guess.

is it safe to trun the boost up slightly or do i need new ecu amongst other new things?

ive mine set to run around 9-10psi for normal driving or 14-15psi for fun, that keeps it nice and safe, they boost cut around 17psi i think, so in v cold weather sometime u may hit boost cut, but thats why its there, to save the engine.....i had mine fitted at OMA and it'll be all set up properly so no worries, you've replaced the MAF too so everthing should be fine, you'll notice a nice increase with the boost controller.

your ecu should be fine id say, you'll not need a stand alone one until you go for a bigger turbo, FMIC, injectors etc etc

whats the standard boost rate?

i`ll never get to that stage of tune, just a bit more poke atm would be nice

i`d also fancy an sti interdooler top mount, purely for the STI logo bling tho

my car has a full system plus downpipe and it is sitting about 0.85 maybe 0.9 ( is it 14 psi per bar ) i would say probably about 1.2 bar, would be no problem

id personally stay at 1bar which equals 14.5psi, 1.2 bar will be hitting boost cut maybe.

yeah u can get a FMIC for 200 quid or so these days....sti 8 ones are better than the standard classic one,and a bit awkward to fit...but they are still in the wrong place, they will always suffer heat soak, esp in traffic and warm days which really has a bad effect on charge temps

yeah ollie just keep it about 1 bar lad

1.2 will hit your fuel cut, as i keep finding out lol, so dropped mine down to 1.18 haha.

i run mine at about 1 bar for "normal" driving unless i see a corsa or something that i know is gonna hassle me lol.

get yourself a fmic bought and a fuel cut defender then you will be able to run 2 bar easy haha.

My car is set up with low boost at 0.8bar, and high boost at 1.2 bar, i actually got OMA to change my low boost the other nite there....i now have the low boost set at 0.5 (leaves the car slow an gutless with very little boost) and then i have the 1.2 bar for "fun" driving .... I wanted to see if the new low boost at this setting (0.5bar) will leave the car easier on petrol for doodling around home and that

it wont affect the economy at all, it may actually make it harder on fuel it is putting the same fuel for the standard 0.8bar (info from a pro)

depends on the turbo how stable the boost is, ifs a nice stable boost then it will run 1.2 bar jsut before the fuel cut kicks in, or he will have an ecu or a fuel cut defender fitted.

I run .8 bar on low boost with high boost set to 1.2 bar
Im also running a reprogrammed epromm from scoobyecu with the fuel cut limit raised so I can get away with 1.6 bar.

I find the 1.2 - 1.4 range to be more than adequate for fun

Standard boost is .8 bar and limp mode is .5 bar AFIK

thanks guys, my next question is...

a few scoobies i`ve had through work all have the black box with gold writing for knock link sensing. again is this something more for highly tuned motors or import motors running lesser fuel etc?

god i`m sounding like a complete subaru retardo

Ive the MRT Knocklink fitted

It monitors detonation with a 3 stage warning light system
green ok
Amber get worried
Red ooops

Really all it does for me is let me see the quality of the sul fuel good fuel the lights stay in the green maxol far too much orange light action.

Probably recommended for all imports

The one on the way to Hollywood. I was on my way to get some work done at AI and they hooked up the det cans. The car was deting at 1.0bar, we ran as much out of it as possible and filled up with texaco super and the det disapeared.
Johny was telling me that Amos got some dodgy fuel out of that garage aswell.

Naw i never hit boost cust out at all mate, car drives good at 1.2 bar....nice level of boost but hoping to up the boost a brave bit when i get ecu/bigger turbo and all the other goodys fitted

I think 1.2 bar is grand and as thats what OMA set its limit at i would trust his judgement
