I have the same thing and found it astonishingly to be caused by the aluminium bonet trasmitting a horible creeking noise into the interior. Press the bonet on either side to reveal the dreadful sound. If you don't have an aluminium bonet then good luck in finding the cause.

I noticed this sound on the Alu bonnet when drying the car off. I also have a faint rattle underneath the clock inside(MY02) I wonder if its the bonnet as you say ? [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]

A really long shot here...
I had a peugeot a while ago, and the air blower thing got filled up with leaves and things.
They made a disturbingly loud rattly crackling noise, believe it or not!!
