Default Boost gauge - mechanical any good?

I'm looking to get a boost gauge for my bugeye - but don't really want to spend the cash on a defi set-up (£200 for the gauge and controller?).

Looking at the autometer mechanical boost gauge (Gauges & Pods : Subaru Impreza Boost Pack Boost Gauge and Pod). Are these any good? I've read on a thread here that they can hiss? Is that just a fitting issue?

Are there any other cheaper options than the defi?

Cheers
Richard

Hello mate

This is mine it is a mechanical one,i've had the same one on my last 3 cars and never had a problem, the gauge and pod cost just a little over 50 quid and very easy to fit(although not by me!)

hope this is of some help to you.

Regards

Nick

Thanks Nick.

I had a mechanical one on my old MY99 back in 2000 and it worked a treat as well.

Looks like the Steppers are only £59 for a boost gauge - which includes the sender, etc. Tempting!

Alright bud, Ive got a uk300 and just fitted a mechanical stepper boost gauge bought from ep racing in leicestershire.Cost £48 and is bang on( 1.15 bar as max). It sits it in a nice carbon fibre 3 hole pod. Looks pretty good.

I fitted a mechanical one to my bug, no problems, used a pillar mount pod - my gauge is a bog standard off the shelf Halfords unit which was bought as a temporary unit until I could get a better one but I now have no plans to change it!
