You have to remove the plastic that holds the gator in place, a couple of screws in the center arm rest release the next bit down near the hand brake, when this is removed you can remove the gator and it's plastic surround which hooks under the center console. when this is released you can unscrew and detach the gear ****.
Or you can just use brute strength and pull the thing off and then stuggle to get the gator back on the new ****

Thanks for that, Danny. Bit confused though, why does keeping the gaitor in place prevent you from unscrewing the gearknob? Sorry if i'm being thick.

Just spotted you have a version 3, not sure if you the rubber gator or the leather one, I've the leather one and had to do the following:
Under the **** is a ring that the gator tucks in and through and then it pushes on under the ****. It's a complete ******* to push back on when it's in place and easier if you remove and turn the gator inside out.
