Default Help! speed needle doesn't work

I've got a '94 WRX wagen (cracking car!) and I've converted it from KPH to MPH by using an inline adaptor between the cable and the speedo head.

While ther I also fitted the MPH sticker.

Then I realise that it will read miles not KM on the odomater.

so.....

I pull the head out, dismantle it and spend 10 minutes adjusting it to the equivalent miles.

and go too far, so I reset it to 000000, write 'zero'd on 17-6-2007 at 81,000 miles' on the back (just in case anyone accuses me of pulling a fast one! )

get it all back together and push the orange speedo needle back on and the bugger is tight as you like! only when you push it round does it loosen up but then it rests at 40mph.

what's gone wrong??? how do I get the needle to go to 0mph AND work???

help a newbie out guys
