Question

Hi ya,
Hope someone can help me.
When I got my Scooby I bought some White MPH/fuel gauge/temp/rev counter clocks to replace the KMH one's. Can anyone tell me some do's and don'ts about removing the existing clocks and putting in the new ones? I don't often mess with stuff like this but I want to try and do it myself (I'm pretty confident I can do it!!).
If someone can give me some pointers on how to get the dash off etc and remove the clocks I would be most grateful.

Many Thanks

Matt Browne

I've not done it, but the advice I read time and again is, "BE CAREFUL OF THE NEEDLES ON THE DIALS, THEY'RE VERY FRAGILE".

People normally shout it.

I think you may find something if you search, as a couple of people have done this.

What year? I've just replaced mine on a 93WRX and bust the fuel gauge needle shaft. Luckily I've managed to get a new one, but it cost me. As already stated THE FUEL AND TEMP NEEDLES DO NOT COME OFF and be very careful with the rev counter. When I pulled the needle out, the entire shaft came with it and it was a b1tch to get working again. I take it you have lockwood dials as the smaller dials fit around the needles without the need for removal. If you want anymore info e-mail me.

going by lockwood's ad, there is no need
to remove the needles. On some dials there
is a slit at the half past position to prevent removing the needles but I don't
know how the lockwood's work. I'm thinking
about purchasing a set though.

Hi All,
I have some lockwood dials and I do not call myself techical but I fitted the dials in a couple of hours (DOUBLE CHECKING AND READING)
Just watch out for the needles on the water and petrol as THESE DONOT COME OFF.
They were quite easy to install, the hardest bit (to me ) was actually taking out the dash and cutting the petrol/water dials off. On the lockwood it says use a sharp knife, I found that that was even harder so I used some garden cutters (more sturdy and sharper).
Maybe taht is why it took me so long, try cutting some hard plastic with a knife and you will know!!!
If you need anymore help e-mail me.
Regards
G.

Hi Matt,
I am sorry but I have your e-mail on my own computer but I am at my girlfriends for the weekend.
Maybe you can phone me/e-mail me again.
I took out the dash by the four bolts around the das (2 on the top and 2 on the bottom).
PLEASE WATCH OUT for the wiring on both sides. It will take time and alot of messing, as the wiring blocks are quite bulky and the wiring short(weel, it was on mine). Remember where the blocks goes and the slowly and carefully remove the dash. You would be best to lower your steering wheel, as you will need the space to get the dash out!!
Once out everything should be plain sailing.
I have not tried to put the white dials onto the original as I would assume that the thickness of them both will hinder the needles.
If there is anything else you need to know.
Please e-mail me .
I hope I have answered your questions.
Regards
G.

Unhappy

After just fitting some silver lockwood dials i can give you first hand advice. Speedo and revs needles come off quite easy.
Petrol and temp DON'T come off at all I tried and broke them.(see my thread on wanted) dials are very hard to get and expect to pay around £150+VAT, I'm quite lucky i managed to get some for £75 (big thanks to peter at garage chip)
Try cutting off the old ones and the new will slide in. GOOD LUCK.

To get over the problem of the rev needle spindle coming out (and this often buggers the unit) clamp the spindle with pin nosed pliers, between the drive unit and the old face.

craigamungos, just seen how much the dials cost! I have been lucky as I bust the fuel gauge last week and managed to get a replacement for £15
