Every vent ive taken out over the years has been a carefull leavering job, never had them out of a classic before but i would think it must be the same principle as there arnt any screws ect.
Try very carefully leavering down each side of it, by trying to make the vent narrower so that it clears the pivot points on each side in the hole, failing that, **** knows! Some of them can be b@st@rds.

I had a similar experience a few months back while getting them out to colour code. One side just has a "lip" that holds the vent in against the dash but the other has a "clip" that holds the vent in. Best way is to use a screwdriver to pull one side forward a bit, then use brute force to pull the whole vent straight out towards you. I was worried about mine but didn't do any damage. (just don't blame me if you do break it though) Seriously, you only have one metal clip to worry about so just give it a good hard pull (oo'err)

I lost one of my clips when I pulled mine out. Took me ages to find the bugger.

I done this about three months ago but no as it has got hot in my car the paint has bubbled up on the vents/dial surround and heater controls but not the gear shift surround or the handles.
Rather annoying but will have to do it again when I can be arsed.
