Question

I'm looking at buying a boost gauge for my MY98 Uk Impreza.

Just wondering if a boost gauge that reads in Psi is any better than one that reads in Bar or vice-versa?

Also I've noticed that some of the smaller ones only read up to 1.5 bar while the larger ones read up to 2.0 bar. If I was going to get one would I be better having one that goes up to 2.0 or would 1.5 be enough? What's the best range to have a boost gauge capable of reading in? (in either bar or psi)

I'm not very knowledgeable in this area so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Gavin

Best to get a guage that measures just more than your car produces then you have the best accuracy. So if you run at .8 bar then 1bar guage is good enough. 1.5 bar will be enough for the majority of cars and very few will need 2 bar guages.
If you have a guage witha dial then it does not matter if it is psi or bar. 1 bar = 14.5 psi. TIM do a couple of suitable guages for just over £20 and you will see their stuff and other guages in Burton Power or Deamon Tweeks catalogues.
If you want a digital guage then I prefer the info in psi as it is easier to take in but if you go to the expense of SPA (digital) then the features are numerous including red or green switchable background, variable contrast, psi or bar, max recall, low warning point and so on. From memory a dual guage for say boost and inlet temp is around £130 and they really are a worthwhile piece of kit.
The range includes oil press/temp. EGT etc etc

I was thinking of buying an Autometer Phantom boost gauge. Would this not be a better quality gauge than a TIM gauge?

The Tim gives you the same info for not a lot of money and the SPA is in a class of its own by comparisson and comes as a dual guage so you can monitor other perameters.
Depends in part if you want it for show or the info you can get and your personal style preferences I suppose and obviously that is personal.
I want as much info and warnings as possible. The current car has a microprocessor and an additional three guages monitoring six functions with associated recording etc. That way I know accurately the effect of any changes I make.
What is the cost of the Autometer?

most uk tuners work in psi, some jap tuners work in bar (specially the gtir boys who swear by one bar of boost), all depends on what gadgets you want (if any) as to how much you can pay, the top jap stuff like greddy and defi have memory recall etc but if you dont need it then why pay for it, we sell basic quality gauges for around £40 complete, either bar or psi, tim is one end of the scale defi is the other, cheers nomad ps 1 bar =14.7 psi
