Gear Knob and Gaiter Removal

Could anyone give me some pointers on removing the Gear **** and Gaiter from an MY99 Impreza?
I'd prefer to have a clue as to what I'm, doing before I viciously tear the whole lot out

**** will unscrew anti-clockwise and the gaitor pops out along with the plasic trim it's clipped on to. Don't be a wuss be brutal, but you shouldn't need a screwdriver/lever..

Gear **** is a twist off as said
I loosened the screws back at the centre console cubby hole in order to get enough movment in the front tray under the stereo.
The spring clips holding the old leather number on were a problem but just leaver them off
. The rest was quite easy just get the surround in the right palce and tighten the bolts
