Default Informing Insurance of modifications ?

Hi all
Has anyone informed their insurance of any mods they've done to their cars? and if so did it put up the premium?
I've fitted a stainless steel 5 " exhaust and had some after market 18 " alloys fitted to my bug.
I'm in x2 minds about informing them as I know if something was to happen they could void the insurance but I don't want to pay any more premiums.
Any thoughts ......?

Inform them. It is insurance fraud if you dont and will invalidate your insurance. It will sound harsh but if you can't afford the insurance hikes, dont mod.

Some will cause little to no change in cost, others will.

I'm with Aviva and found it very easy to inform them of mods. They actually had a drop down list online.
When i hit the quote button after declaring to my surprise the quote came out £20 cheaper.

Declare them ALL. If you have a bad crash and t's investigated you will be screwed. As already said, some things increase the premium and others don't.

Better to tell them. If you don't you may as well not take out a policy....it's worthless!

What makes me laugh is how the premium goes up when informing them of modifications that actually make the car safer. Bigger brakes for instance.

Would deffo be telling them though OP, insurance companies will search for any reason they can to invalidate the policy in the event of a claim, by having undeclared mods your just handing it to them on a plate.

I remember a couple of years back a pal had a crash in his E46 M3. Went off the road in the wet and wrote the car off. He got it recovered to a pals workshop where he had to put all the standard bits back on before the insurance man came out.

You HAVE to declare all mods, if you cant afford the premium increase then dont do the mod. A decent insurer shouldnt charge any / much more for cosmetic mods like alloys though

The thinking behind having bigger brakes is that you will brake later then normal for the road conditions making your chance to have an accident higher

JPC500, the best thing is to ask about mods BEFORE doing any.

My eldest's second car was a lovely Ibiza 1.4, but oh no, it HAD to have 17" wheels didn't it.

When he asked his insurers, they declined to insure it

Had he NOT asked, but been in an accident, no insurance.

And the REAL trouble comes if you hit something likea £50,000 car and cause 4 Whiplash claims or worse. No insurance and you are in REAL trouble.....

Especially now you've said you've modded it on a public forum!

Best to declare them, maybe pleasantly surprised it's not much (if any !) dearer

My insurance is due early Jan and I'm going to fit some goodies to the car over X-Mas - so I got a quote from GreenLight declaring all the mods I shall be putting on (Sports Cat, exhaust, panel filter, Pink Sti suspension and 17" alloys) and the quote is cheaper than my standard renewal !

Its not always on high value claims. I had an accident once - total cost around £1100 or so, and they came and inspected my car. Tyre tread, break pads etc.

When we say that you should be insured properly, its not for your benefit its for the poor sod you crash into.
