Question for the insurance legal specialists.
Hi Guys, Here is my issue.
10 years ago in Dymchurch- Kent. I hit a patch of standing water, which caused me to lose control and meet with a lamp post! Subsequently writing off my car.
Now i was third party f&t covered at the time of the accident.
I gave my insurance and licence details to the police a few days later in London. as the accident put me in hospital at Ashford overnight. The police sent me on a driver improvement scheme even though i felt i wasn't driving irratically.
Ok here is where the legal bit comes in.
5 years later (2006) a letter from the MIB appears stating i owe money for the damaged road furniture (lamp post!) as i wasn't insured. To which i promptly replied by letter and phone, stating i was insured and i gave them my old insurers details, and also stated that the police also had my insurance details. I then no longer recieve any more calls or correspondands from the MIB.
Yesterday (a full 10 years later) i recieve another letter from the MIB saying i owe them money again!!! However i no longer have any details to defend myself with as i have moved home and alot of paperwork has simply been thrown or lost.
My question is, where do i stand here?? Can they even ask for money this long down the line?!!
Thanks in advance, Matt.

Do you know what company you were insured with at the time?
If so they should be able to write a letter confirming your details at the time.
It does seem odd they have taken so long to contact you. Ring the MIB and see what they have to say.... explain the circumstances

Sounds a bit dodgy to me, councils needing to save/find money - being squeezed by the treasury so they decide to see if they can rake in a few bob praying on those less questioning than yourself. 10 years is taking the p!ss though

Thought tpf&t would cover this issue as essentially the road furniture
would be the third party no?
It does seem a little odd they are persueing this so long after the initial incident.
